Jeter Is Back, at Last

After almost nine months, two different cracks in his 39-year-old left ankle and the misery of watching one flawed shortstop after another try to fill in for him, Derek Jeter is back at Yankee Stadium.

Jeter was activated from the 60-day disabled list Thursday morning, and is the designated hitter and batting second for the Yankees against the Kansas City Royals. He hasn’t played in the majors since breaking his ankle in last season’s playoffs against the Detroit Tigers. He hoped to be back opening day, but he suffered another crack in the ankle during spring training.

“It has been a long time,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “We were expecting it to be opening day but he had the setback where he had the new fracture. It’s really nice to be able to put him in the lineup.”

The Yankee captain was in the midst of his rehab assignment in Triple-A. He wasn’t expected to return until this weekend at the earliest, but events at the major-league level led Yankee brass to activate him. Injuries to designated hitter Travis Hafner and center fielder Brett Gardner in Wednesday night’s victory over the Royals meant that the Yankees needed a right-handed DH—and with Jeter already scheduled to DH for Triple-A Scranton, general manager Brian Cashman figured it was time to take off the training wheels.

“He’s finishing his rehab off in the big leagues,” Cashman said.

In Jeter’s absence, the punchless Yankees have run out one imperfect replacement after another—Jayson Nix, Eduardo Nunez, Reid Brignac, Alberto Gonzalez, Luis Cruz—and all have been disappointing. So even while it remains unclear how Jeter’s injuries, age and long layoff will impact his play, he has to be better than the alternatives.

Said Cashman: “We’re better with him here, period.”

Yes, Jeter is one of the best shortstops to have ever played the game. But he’s also 39 years old. I’m willing to bet that he is NOT a Nolan Ryan who will play the game for another decade or so.

Yep, his body is starting to fail him. I guess that what happens when you're near 40.

I’ve been a Yankees fan since I was five-years-old. I’m glad Jeter is over his pain. But I’ve just never cared for the guy for some reason.

But I’ve just never cared for the guy for some reason.

The reason I don't care for him is that he seems so full of himself. Yeah, he's very, very good and a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. So was Joe DiMaggio and he managed to run the bases with his head down.
