I’m fairly active. It just strikes me that hiking the AT is masochistic, not recreational or pleasurable.

Think what you will, but there nothing that compares to spending time in the beauty of God's creation.
I think it's one of the most pleasant things I could do.

It’s not a timed marathon, unless you make it one - but, it’s not to everyone’s liking either. You do need to be prepared to get wet, hot/cold and uncomfortable at times (which can be mitigated with good equipment and some common sense), but the payoff in scenery and serenity more than makes up for those.
