GPS Leads Woman Onto Railroad Tracks, Minivan Destroyed

BELMONT, Mass. — A woman and her two children, ages 7 and 10, narrowly escaped serious injury when a train smashed into their minivan after a GPS device led the driver onto MBTA train tracks Tuesday night.

The woman was driving southbound on Brighton Street shortly before 9 p.m. when the GPS device directed her to make a right turn which placed her vehicle directly onto railroad tracks.

Apparently the woman was unable to drive off the tracks, forcing her to flee the vehicle with her children.

Shortly thereafter, an MBTA Fitchburg bound commuter rail train carrying 70 passengers slammed into the minivan. Nobody was injured in the collision either on or off the train.

No information was given as to why the woman could not drive off the tracks nor was there a reason given as to why she couldn't see that she was driving onto them in the first place.

“Let me guess. Obama supporter and wants to get PAID by the evil white man that owns the train”

I’ll bet you she’s suing the evil white men who made the defective GPS she claims put her on the railroad tracks too.

Apparently the woman was unable to drive off the tracks. Really. Suicide attempt.

The car was 'stuck' on the tracks. Apparently she wasn't driving across a train 'intersection', she was driving across JUST the tracks. She high-centered it over the actual rails.

Predict. Guaranteed especially if an Obamo supporter. I would have had her take an standard field sobriety test and requested to see her cell phone if I were working the scene. And the GPS device of course. I’d be interested to see what her kids have to say but you have to tread lightly in that area.

Last year had a yo-yo drive his car around a barricade and
down a flooded street

We had to go out in boats and fish him off top of car

When questioned by cops why was driving into a flooded road
said

“GPS told me to turn down this street...”

Was charged with ignoring a traffic device.......

I’m sure she is hoping that the GPS unit was destroyed so that there is no conflicting evidence.

Can’t someone think, that if a GPS says turn right, but a right turn takes you down railroad tracks and not a street, that this is not the correct turn to make? Maybe you should keep driving, let the GPS annouce it’s recalculating, then see if it takes you on a realistic route????

There have been other examples of this behavior:

http://www.adn.com/2012/08/23/2597925/man-guided-by-gps-drives-off-ferry.html
August 23, 2012

About 400 feet from the ferry dock, a GPS unit in the man's car told him to take a hard right turn, Schofield said.

“The GPS apparently misrouted him, and he drove down the ramp for launching boats into the water,” Schofield said. “He was unfamiliar with the area is the only answer I have for you.”

GPS devices are a great tool, but they are not fool proof.

It only took me a few hours of using one to learn I could not depend on it for 100% accuracy.

I try to know about where I am going before I start a trip. If there is a conflict between where I think I should go and where the GPS directs me to go, I follow my instincts.

I remember a guy who was so drunk, he drove onto the RR tracks in a town close to where I grew up. It was after a beer and BBQ wedding. He did find a way to get it off before the next freight train came down the tracks.

I have never used a GPS and have yet to get lost. Of course, almost 40 years of reading strip maps in the military is a big plus. I know several people - wife included - who have no sense of direction. I can tell her to turn north or south on US or TX road and she asks “Do I have to turn left or right?”
