I’ve had two Ford Explorers covering a span of nearly 20 years, and nothing. Nothing. Just routine maintenance. I do need the ball joints replaced on my 04 Sport, which I’m in negotiations for. Once done, I expect another 40K on top of the existing 130K.
Weird seeing all the Ford bashing here.

I drive a 65 Chevy PU with 1,469,000 miles on it and a 36 3 window Chevy coupe with a 350 small block, 400 trans, power stearing, disc brakes, electric windows, and air conditioning!!
Just picked up a 62 3/4 ton 2WD out of Texas.
Not a big fan of the coil spring swing arm rear end but have a few.
Got a 409 I’m seein in that truck with a live front axle...
But $50k for a freaking pickup truck???
LOL just take a look at the new car dealerships, any brand
you can get pickup trucks up to 85-90 k nowadays, mine is a little upscale anyway, have driven mostly fords since the early 60’s had a few gmc as well (company trucks) but they were mostly not so good, all the fords have been pretty good to very good, use them for work (construction) have an 1990 f150 4x4 with more than 200k on use for work and driven by the crew, runs great and replaced fuel pump in one tank only, beside regular maintenance, traded a 20054x4 in on this new one had 200k on it replaced a couple of bearings is all otherwise ran like new
Which is why I will buy and drive what I like, no matter whether it's considered to be sacrilegious on this site to do so.
I'm pretty sure my parents brought me home in a Chevy from the maternity ward in 1953. I've driven GM vehicles all my life, and I ain't about to switch now.
Very nice truck, Having been a Ford man all my life I really like the new styling, they got away from the rounded noses (97-02), and the little “duck tail” on the rear of the bed really makes it stand out, though the Raptors are the best looking truck I have ever seen off of the showroom. Wish I could trade mine in for one, until then I have to stick with my lifted ‘95 extended cab on 35’s in Bright Sapphire. Or “The Purp” as I call her. Well I have to put a new front clip on it first, I hit an elk doing 65mph and it only did body damage. Built Ford Tough!

Damn, that's a lot of miles in eight years. It works out to over a hundred miles a day, seven days a week, since it was new.
I bought my Chevy Silverado brand new in 98, and it's got 198,000 on the clock. And it's been a work truck all these years. My average works out to under 39 miles a day, since new.
Whatever job you've got, you can keep it! LOL

Wife has the 2006 MarkLT, which is the Lincoln lipstick flavor of the F150. Replaced her aging Lincoln Continental with it. Once she drove it for a while, she’s upset I never got her a pickup before. She won’t drive anything else now.
Recommend changing the spark plugs around 70k miles vice 100k. After 80-95k miles, the carbon buildup around the base of the plugs is stronger than the ceramic plugs, resulting in the plug shearing in torsion when attempting to extract them. Results in a $1k-$5k spark plug change after retapping the block.
Other than that, after 2000, then 2004, invest in a diagnostics cable and reader so you can access the CPU yourself to determine your maintenance requirements. They can be purchased for about $100 and $70 for the cable. It’ll save a lot of maint labor costs.
They have a lot of nitnoid replacement part costs. e.g. if your gas cap door gets smacked, a small plastic pin breaks off, with the door falling off. Should be a $1 item to replace and reseat the door cover. Instead it is part of a $500 assembly, go figure.
Other than that, it’s a sweet ride.
I just rolled 442,000 miles on an ‘84 F150XLT Supercab (put in a rebuilt 302 at 72k) and still on the original tranny.
Only problem is after 30 years, the plastic parts are brittle and tough to replace. Hard to find mechanics who know how to tune a carburetor anymore. I was all GMC/Chevy before that.
PS, if you permanently mount a camper shell on the rear, you can have the pickup truck re-registered as a personal car vice a ‘commercial’ truck, reducing your annual CA registration from $260+ to $70 ballpark.
I own a 1969 Ford F-250 and I'll never get rid of hit. It's a short bed 3/4 ton with a 390ci. I love this truck.
I own a '02 Wrangler but I don't get to drive it much. It just turned over to 30k miles.
I bought my 2008 Ford Edge back in the fall of 2008 when the economy was flatlining and everyone was in a panic, and got a great deal on it (the dealer seemed determined to push autos off the lot). I’ve got about 70K miles on it and haven’t had a single problem with it. That said I’m not sure I’d buy another UAW made auto.
Tough trucks . I completely obliterated my 2000 Explorer a few weeks ago in a horrible, fiery crash featuring ripping the front left side of the truck off and barrel rolling a few times before hitting a tree hard enough to fell the tree.
I walked away with hardly a scratch.
Then I went out and bought a... Ford Explorer.

I’m a car nut from way back and just do not care for the gaping catfish mouth grille with the big black plastic bumper running through it. Ford didn’t start the trend, Korea and Japan did, and isn’t the worst offender, but it just doesn’t look good. A car that I love, the Subaru BRZ, even has it to some extent, but would look better without it. Groupthink. There are more ways than one to handle the front fascia of a car or truck.
