True some stuff you can get on the cheap at the .99 Store, but some you are better off getting at Walmart. I did find some canned roast beef in gravy once (Made and Canned in America) that was great, but it didn't last long and they never restocked it.

Must be a different 99 cent store. The ones I’ve seen here only sell bobble head dolls, kitchen gadgets, candles and anything else made in China.

the '99-Cent Diet'

At least it's better than the 50 Cent diet, which is cocaine and cognac.

(those that are up on their pop culture references will get it...)

Tell this to the Dept of H&HS. Replace EBT cards with (half the current amount in) Dollar Store gift cards.

For lunch, I had a cup of cornmeal mush which rings in at 15 cents.

Even I have been converted from buying my produce at Nob Hill or Whole Foods.

They sell in quantities that I usually cannot finish and for a couple of bucks less I can get the same lettuce, red & orange peppers, cheap azz cilantro, broccoli, etc.

Heck, even yogurt is way cheaper, as are eggs.

I can even get red potatoes in the size I prefer, medium/large, with more regularity than the other stores.

I'll say it again, the best place to get groceries "on a shoestring" is Grocery Outlet. If there's one near you, check it out every time you pass by. I can't count how many times I've gotten meat and cheese at 50-80% off what I'd pay at Safeway, but you have to keep an eye open for those kinds of deals.

The only things I ever buy at those Daollar Stores are:

Bazooka Bubble Gum (hubby loves it & it’s hard to find)

Wrapping paper around the Holidays

Mean Green Cleaning spray. That stuff killed all the black mold in my basement, when nothing else would. I still have cases of it, and if I could bathe my kiddies in it, I would ;-)

Only food I see in those places is Mexican cereal and peanuts from Vietnam.

The food section at our local Dollar Store has expanded to two aisles and gets bigger each time we visit. They have now added a frozen foods section

Just like Walmart, Big Lots, Dollar General and many other stores that sell food products at a discount, some items are good value, some are not.

We have learned to stock up when we see something we like that is a good value because the item may not be restocked when sold out.

My neck of the woods we have “Grocery Outlet”, a chain that carries discontinued items/ overstocks from the main supermarket chains.

One time I was in there and they had the same kind of thing, canned roast beef in gravy, so I got about 4 cans.

Had a meal with it served over noodles about a week later and it was DELISH!!, so I went back, it was all gone.

So next time when I saw something, almost the same, canned chicken in gravy with dumplings, I bought a couple cans, took them home, and tried it that very night. Excellent stuff. Good, cheap canned meats are hard to find.

So I made a point to go back the next day and bought a case of it!

Haven’t been in there for a while, I should check it out.

It’s amazing what you can find at the .99 store. I’m gluten intolerant and found Gluten Free Pantry items which normally sell for around $5-$6 box. A lot of their canned goods are actually less than .99.

Did you know there is no Trader Joe’s, Costco or 7-11’s in Fort Wayne, Indiana?

Which means no blue Stilton cheese, no decent $2 slices of pizza and no Slurpee’s.

It is really all quite sad, when you really think about it.

80% of the canned food at the Dollar Tree in my town is made in China. No thank-you.

A few things here and there are made in India, Turkey or Spain. I’ll take a chance on those.
