Lou Reed, the US songwriter, poet and vocalist with the Velvet Underground, had a liver transplant last month, according to his wife, the musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson.

“It’s as serious as it gets. He was dying. You don’t get it for fun,” said Anderson, who added that her husband was now on the road to recovery following the life-saving surgery.

Reed, 71, canceled a number of concerts in April and had surgery in Cleveland rather than in his native New York due to what Anderson described as the “dysfunctional” hospitals in his home town. …

Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson? I had no idea! Love that about the hospitals. Freud called it the reality principle.

Best of luck, Mr. Reed. Back in the day he put on a hell of a show.

I had the same reaction you did to Lou being married to Anderson. I wonder if she calls him “O Superman”?

Probably better that Lou ended up with Laurie than staying with “Rachel” . . .

I’ll never have another reason to post this on FR, so I better do it while I got the chance. This is better than the original IMO.

Walk on the wild side is a great song, but livers don’t live long pickled.

I got a chance to meet Lou Reed on his promotional tour with John Cale for “Songs for Drella” the Andy Warhol tribute album.

The album is quite remarkable in its own right especially since Reed and Cale were seemingly estranged since their Velvets days.

I saw him perform at the Syria Mosque in the 80’s here and he put on a great show live. One of those artists that I’m happy to say I’ve seen while they were alive.

Despite his obvious liver abuse from the R&R lifestyle and age I’m glad to see he has a shot at more life.

As a transplant recipient I am happy for Lou Reed but how about acknowledging the donor or the donor’s families loss. There are liver transplants that can be done with living donors but she sounds cold,

“You send out two planes – one for the donor, one for the recipient – at the same time. You bring the donor in live, you take him off life support. It’s a technological feat.

“I was completely awestruck. I find certain things about technology truly, deeply inspiring.”

No compassion for the donor or the family. Maybe, it was an exerpt of the interview.

Lou Reed has been on Rudy Giuliani’s case longer than FreeRepublic:

From “Sick of You”

“My arms and legs are shrunk the food all has lumps
They discovered some animal no one’s ever seen
It was an inside trader eating a rubber tire
After running over rudy giuliani

They say the president’s dead but no one can find his head
It’s been missing now for weeks
But no one noticed it he had seemed so fit
And I’m sick of it

I’m sick of you
I’m so sick of you, bye, bye, bye”

Didn’t Lou break a leg or ankle in Cleveland several years ago?

Don’t think he’s too big on jazz (this is the kind of stuff he started out playing), but he did use heroin and did catch hepatitis.

Well, I’ll have to take that back as far as jazz goes . . . apparently he was inspired by Ornette Coleman, the free-jazz saxophonist. Even worked with Coleman on “The Raven”.
