Lou Reed, the US songwriter, poet and vocalist with the Velvet Underground, had a liver transplant last month, according to his wife, the musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson.

“It’s as serious as it gets. He was dying. You don’t get it for fun,” said Anderson, who added that her husband was now on the road to recovery following the life-saving surgery.

Reed, 71, canceled a number of concerts in April and had surgery in Cleveland rather than in his native New York due to what Anderson described as the “dysfunctional” hospitals in his home town. …

Is there an age limit where people are no longer eligible for transplants? Or is it all based on money and fame and political acumen?

I discovered the Velvet Underground in the 80’s and loved them. For some strange reason I also adore his album “Berlin”

Ger well Mr. Reed.

I didn’t now they were married either. Get well soon Lou!

I’d say something about the pow- pow-power of positive drinking, but that seems wrong.

71? A liver transplant? What younger person who didn’t drink themselves into the need for one, went without?

I had an aunt in her sixties who needed a lung transplant (didn’t smoke) & couldn’t get one because she was “too old”. Needless to say, she died.

Great, um, song. Not that I have any idea how accurately it represents the experience.

No way. And if I did, it was a long, long time ago. But I don’t.

I wonder if he used the Cleveland Clinic. People with the means fly there for heart surgery, too.

My oldest brother had a liver transplant in 1989, he passed away 5 years ago and it wasn’t due to his liver. It’s not easy dealing with a new liver it changed his life forever but it can be done. Prayers for a long healthy life!

I assume that is a rhetorical question.

Of course being famous, rich or well-connected has it's advantages. Always has and always will. It's neither right or wrong but just the way of the world.

If you are just a 71-year-old regular Joe living on social security checks, you can forget about a liver transplant. So just cut back on the whiskey sours and blow the leftover money at the race track or the casino.

Funny...I’m only a few years younger than Reed,David Crosby and others and I’ve never needed a liver transplant. The most exciting thing, medically speaking, that’s ever happened to me is having had a hip replacement. But then I’ve never done heroin...or coke...or guys.

Lou Reed died today - thought you might want to know... From your link:

‘Cause when love is gone, there’s always justice.
And when justive is gone, there’s always force.
And when force is gone, there’s always Mom. Hi Mom!

So hold me, Mom, in your long arms. So hold me,
Mom, in your long arms.
In your automatic arms. Your electronic arms.
In your arms.
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms.
Your petrochemical arms. Your military arms.
In your electronic arms.

First heard it today from you. Dunno if it’s related to this liver transplant.
