Ireland is to become the first country in the European Union to ban branding on cigarette packages by using plain packaging and uniform labeling, the government said on Tuesday.

None of this really matters or affects the numbers of folks smoking. If you simply said that you couldn’t use any preservatives or chemicals on the tobacco...just sell raw regular tobacco in the rolled-up item....it would take away ninety percent of what people get addicted to.

Imagine if other things couldn’t be put in a pretty package and sold to the masses.

People get addicted to the nicotine.

Which is just as present in raw tobacco as it is in processed tobacco.

If smoking is so bad, why not just ban the sale and possession of tobacco instead of pussyfooting around with these silly regulations?

Imagine the increase in crime with an outright tobacco prohibition.

I'll still grow my own and just become a criminal. Stupid laws need to be broken.

Are you nuts?

1. Look at all the great tax money tobacco produces.

2. If people stopped smoking they would live longer and Social Security would go broke even faster.

Curious....

How much do you grow? How much land does it require? How much do you smoke?

I grow enough to offset a great deal of the cost of the commercial loose all-natural tobacco that I buy and blend it with. It requires about 2 ft between plants and 3 ft between rows. Federal law limits individuals to 1/10th of an acre, but that's way more than I want to grow.

I smoke like a chimney. I don't smoke when I'm asleep.

And they are beautiful plants.

I used to rail against this kind of crap.

Now, I'm more in the mood to just let it go.

Sooner or later, smokes will get back to $0.25 per pack and people will be able to smoke in public again.

My last ex-wife and I both had cigarettes going in the delivery room at the hospital while she dropped my 11-lb. baby boy 30 years ago.

This will ramp up smuggling big time. Marlboros will become very valuable and a tremendous status symbol.

That won’t happen as long as the European Union is around. They’re hell-bent on increasing the size of government and micromanaging all their citizens’ lives.

Could you grow a pipe full per day in a 12 x 12 garden?

Probably as far as volume goes, but remember it takes time to process it. Minimum for me is 6 months.
