For his 107th Memorial Day, Richard Arvine Overton, who saw many of his fellow soldiers fall in the line of duty in World War II and even more die over the following decades, is planning a quiet day at the Texas home he built after returning home from World War II.
He wouldn’t want it any other way.
Overton, who is believed to be the nation's oldest veteran, told FoxNews.com he’ll likely spend the day on the porch of his East Austin home with a cigar nestled in his right hand, perhaps with a cup of whiskey-stiffened coffee nearby.
“I don’t know, some people might do something for me, but I’ll be glad just to sit down and rest,” the Army veteran said during a phone interview. “I’m no young man no more.” (snip)

He looks pretty good for 107.
He looks good for a 107 year old who smokes cigars and drinks spiked coffee.
I think it’s his special coffee “blend” and the ‘gars.
Best quote ever from a centenarian.
When asked how people could live so long, he replied, “Drink a quart of sour mash whiskey and smoke a pack of cigarettes a day.”
The surprised interviewer blurted out, “Really?”
To which the centenarian replied, “No, of course not. Don’t be gullible and stupid and you might live as long as me.”

He looks great, smiling and seating on the stairs! I sure hope someone does something for him - even sit on the stairs and chat. Sure wish I could. I’d be honored to light his cigar for him.
Years ago I read an article in the National Geographic about very old people of (then) Soviet Georgia. Seems that one of those smoked a pack of cigarettes and had two shots of vodka every day.

I was going to say that! He doesn't look a day over 77.
I got to meet the last Confederate Veteran and last veteran of the Civil War period. He was Uncle Bill Lundy of Crestview, Florida. I don’t recall his exact age but it was well over 100.
There were two who lived after him but I am pretty sure both were eventually found to be fakes.
Still doing yard work! I guess that’s why he looks to be in his seventies, or thereabouts.

You and everyone else are surely right. He looks to be in remarkably good shape for his age.
The guy is incredible.
My father in law lived to be 102 and was always healthy and lived on his own home with my mother in law who lived to be 99 in their house. She worked til age 80 as the private secretary to the president of a well known corporation.
My father in law was 38 when he enlisted in WWII. He had bayonet scars on both arms from a hand to hand encounter with a jap soldier. He said it was him or me so I had to do what I had to do. He was still painting houses at age 75. What a guy!!! The last of a breed just like my dad.
My dad smoked a pack a day, then who knows how many pipes, and did have a shot now and again. Was a small town doctor and worked 18 hour days. Fought in WW2 and Korea. Made it to 90. Oh, and never exercised.
Go figure.
I knew a WWI and WWII Navy veteran, we called Mr. Joe who lived to age 106. When he was 100 a VA doctor told him if he did not quit smoking it would kill him. Mr. Joe thought that that was pretty funny but he switched from the unfiltered Camels he had always smoked to filtered Winstons.
Mr. Joe drank a shot of whiskey every day and enjoyed a bottle of beer every night. He went dancing on the weekends til he was a bit over 100 years. He always had plenty of dancing partners and he did love the ladies.
