Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano spews ash, gas

Columns of gas and ash 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) high were detected after two strong explosions from the Popocatepetl volcano, Mexico's Cenapred disaster-management agency said Friday.

The first blast came at 10:14 p.m. Thursday, followed by another a little more than two hours later.

The explosions deposited glowing fragments up to 1.5 kilometers from the crater as well as columns of ash and gas that were carried northeastward by the prevailing winds, Cenapred said.

Popocatepetl, which rises 5,452 meters (17,875 feet) above sea level, is located about 64 kilometers (40 miles) from Mexico City.

Mexican authorities have prepared contingency plans to evacuate communities near the volcano and they placed around 700 military personnel on alert to aid in that effort should it become necessary.

The closest municipalities to Popocatepetl are around 12 kilometers (7.2 miles) away.

Popocatepetl, Mexico's second-highest peak, is one of 14 active volcanoes in the Aztec nation.

Careful that this volcano doesn’t pull the plug on the swamp land that Mexico City is built on.

"What Aztec nation?"

You didn't hear? Montezuma the 23rd just abdicated. His son Montezuma the 24th just took over. He's planning to attack Spain next year.

Wow, I climbed the 3 highest Mexican volcanoes, Ixta, Popo and Orizaba in the early 1990’s. Popo has been closed for climbing for much of the time since then. It was spewing steam when I climbed Popo. Like having 1000 matches struck under your nose. Wonder what the EPA thinks about their Diesel and Gasoline sulpher reduction mandates being wiped out by a volcano they cannot regulate or arrest?

Just had two Alaska volcanos lit off in just the last couple of days, Cleveland and Pavlof, they are about 700 miles from me down the Aleutians. They are all including Mexico part of the Ring Of Fire.

Whats next?
I suggest we start observing these events.

I believe that is the volcano the Spanish explorers climbed and got their first glimpse of that unpronounceable name now known as Mexico City.

Why were the Spanish there? To collect sulfur so they could make gunpowder out of local ingredients.

Sadly, Frederic Church didn't paint Popocatepetl, so Cotopaxi will just have to suffice:

Wonder what the EPA thinks..

Heard one of the EPA fed guys talk earlier this year about all the pollution in Texas. He acknowledged that much of it was coming from Mexico which is why Texas needs to lower their rate to compensate for it. Everyone in the room laughed. You just can’t account for stupid sometimes.

Back in 1970, Mr. Mercat and I camped in the saddle between popo and iota. We were able to see all the ranges in both directions to the Atlantic and to the Pacific. Amazing place.
