To wit: Let's roll back a few years to the day my mother was attacked at her volunteer job at the Republican Party HQ in Appleton Wisconsin. Her attacker was a known offender with a history of violence. He had barged in yelling obscenities over perceived offenses against him consisting of phonecalls (like we all get at campaigning time). Luckily all the man did manage to do was knock her down then storm off. He was arrested the same afternoon as eyewitnesses knew who he was. (Had I been there he would have been the next recipient of a knockdown but I digress).
Now that concealed-carry is a legal right in Wisconsin, my mother will next Saturday complete her course at the gun range for her permit. I don't see her defending herself any other way, honestly. She's much more unsteady on her feet and not strong now. But her nice little Ruger makes her equal to pushy bullies now!
Nothing like deterrence. Do you criminals know which little old lady might just have you staring down a gunbarrel instead of having her purse? No? GOOD!
