Geno Smith's generation ("Millennials")
ESPN ^ | May 9, 2013 | Jemele Hill

I wouldn't blame Geno Smith for thinking life as a professional football player is overrated.

Even by the standards of today's vicious media landscape, the assassination of Smith's character is shockingly swift.

When he starred at West Virginia, Smith was characterized as humble, studious, courteous and bright.

Now he's perceived as entitled, whiny and lazy.

No one knows for sure how much of what's being said about Smith, who was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round, is true. Some have suggested race is the reason Smith has been criticized so harshly. Or it could be that Smith is just collateral damage in the Jets' awkward handling of their quarterback situation.

But I have an alternate theory, which not only applies to Smith, but seemingly a lot of young athletes from this generation.

Smith is a millennial, the generation of people born in the 1980s or '90s who irritate their elders with their empowered attitude and inability to develop thick skin.

Sadly, being a quarterback for the high profile New York Jets, he’s not going to get many breaks. I wish him the best of luck.

And I think the main point of the article was to cast a negative light on current theories in education and child development, not to condemn Smith.

Maybe he made an a— of himself in meetings with some teams, maybe not.

I think his “sin” is that he didn’t get drafted as high as a lot of the “experts” said he would get drafted and for some reason they are trying to salvage their limited credibility.

The most stunning part of the article is that a college pays Jemele Hill to teach.

She sure sounds like a twit on ESPN, so it’s no wonder, I’m sure she fits right in.

Geno is a good quarterback. Might become a great one given time to develop and a good team with a good system to grow in. But New York has fans with unreasonable expectations, media assassins and proctologists and players who have no concept of the meaning of the word “team.”

If I were a quarterback I’d rather play for the worst team in the NFL than for the Jets. Oh, wait...

Ms. Hill nailed it. I have seen exactly what she is talking about in some of my relatives' kids. She is spot on.

"This semester, I had one student who seemed close to a panic attack because she received an unflattering grade on a paper. In my class, students aren't allowed to use computers or text. And if their cellphones ring while in class, points are deducted from their final grade. I was shocked to learn from my students that the rules for my class are an anomaly. In most of their other classes, many of my students pass the time on social media or by texting."

This is actually a really good article.

Smith might “win” the starting QB job. Sanchez has reached the point of no return. If Sanchez starts, expect a poor season. If Smith starts and the Jets don’t win, expect the NY meadia to eat him alive.
