A North Carolina high school pulled a teen’s senior portrait because she had the portrait taken with her baby boy.
As ABC reports:
A high school student is fighting back after her senior photo was pulled from the school yearbook.
The photo shows North Carolina senior Caitlin Tiller holding her now one-year old son.
The school asked students to have their picture taken with something that best represents them or an achievement.
Tiller chose her son because he represented her drive to stay in school. The school didn’t see it that way. Caitlin says she was told the picture promoted teen pregnancy. She sees it as a symbol of responsibility and love.
“They should be proud that the students are willing to stay in school and graduate and make something of their self and not try and hide it,” Tiller said.
School officials would only say the yearbook should be all about the student and not an extension of the student’s family.
As we’ve said before, preventing abortion means preventing unplanned pregnancies and supporting mothers. This includes teen mothers. Of course pregnancy and parenthood represent serious challenges for a teenager, and reducing teen pregnancy rates (read: unplanned pregnancy rates) is important. But once a teenager is already pregnant–or already a parent–she should be supported, as all parents should be supported.
Society’s message to our youth should be: “Here are the serious responsibilities involved in pregnancy and parenthood. Here are the ways you can avoid pregnancy [abstinence, various birth control methods]. But if you do get pregnant, you will still be okay. You are not alone.”
Tiller’s attitude about being a teen mom is admirable, and we salute her.
I have to agree. The school would rather her enter their on site abortion clinic and kill the child.
The year book should be about the students, not their families. There is little difference between a student who poses with their child or one that poses with a sibling or a parent, uncle, aunt or grandparent.
In my opinion, the school was correct in rejecting the picture.

I tend to agree. If you agreed on this...why not have your dog in the picture, or some nephew?
Agreed. Being pro-life does not mean accepting/tolerating this “lifestyle choice.”
If they were supposed to be posed with something representing them and their “achievements” or something in which they take pride or find inspiration... then I do not think it was inappropriate to have the picture with the baby.
I am guessing this is in a different section than the “senior portraits”. Some of the students probably were posed in sports uniforms or some action photo of them participating in some type of activity.
When will the lawsuit be filed?

Just had a not alone visit by my 24yo step daughter. Not alone for sure, here to hit up mom for some cash; driving a hand me down car; on every public assistance program known to human kind with no job or education but with many friends in the same social circle who are in the same boat with no ambitions to be productive members of society.

This here’s the problem right here. For Caitlin it was a baby. I wonder how many others wanted a picture of their X-box. Or facebook page. Or something equally important.

Students were told to pose with something that is important or inspires them. She chose to pose with her kid. The school was wrong to say no. My son’s school is a lot better than this school. Senior pictures can be about whatever makes you, you. One classmate is in her cheer uniform, Logan got his pics taken at his church camp with a big cross by him. A classmate of his has a senior picture in her yearbook of her looking down the barrel of her dad’s AR 15. Another classmate had her pic taken in camo paint and a uniform crawling on the ground as she is enlisting after graduation. This is no different. Johnnie loves guns, Jen is defined by the military, Brennan loves to cheer, Logan loves God, this girl loves her child and is defined by her, no difference.
The instructions were to have the picture taken with "something that best represents them or an achievement." This young mother followed this instruction to a T. Having a child and still staying in school and graduating is truly a major achievement. Children require serious caregiving, and if she could be responsible enough to do that and still reach her academic goals, it's the most meaningful thing to her.
As you for your comment that it's no different from having your picture taken with "a sibling or a parent, uncle, aunt or grandparent" --- OK, what of it? What if a students had to carry out responsibilities toward a handicapped sibling, a hospitalized parent, a disabled grandparent? Family responsibility is honorable. And besides, the selection of how to do the picture was her choice.
It wasn't criminal, it wasn't fraudulent, it wasn't indecent. More power to her. Take the picture.
Was the baby graduating? No? Then he shouldn’t have been in the picture.
Ok, I see it was to pose with and accomplishment but I can see the school not wanting to promote her behavior of having unprotected sex and unwed mothers.

I'm with the girl who didn't drop out of school with millions of other girls in that same situation.
Great that she didn’t have an abortion, but I think that the normalization of out of unwed motherhood is indecent, and that having sex with someone who doesn’t care about you and abandons you when they get you pregnant is the opposite of an achievement. If teenagers were as.horrified by the idea of unwed motherhood as my friends and I were when we were growing up, there wouldn’t be this skyrocketing rate of illegitimacy.
I graduated from law school 35 years ago with a two year old son. At KU we walk down the hill and through the bell tower to the ceremony. I wish I had carried him with me that day. When he walked down the hill in 2007 I lost it. It took him longer than he brother or any of his cousins - due to health issues he could hardly walk but he did it.
