Penn State trustees race sees reform candidates unseat incumbents

UNIVERSITY PARK — The candidates endorsed by the grass-roots group Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship won the three seats on the university’s board of trustees, unseating the two incumbents who include local surgeon Paul Suhey.

Barbara Doran, William “Bill” Oldsey and Edward “Ted” Brown won in what was a runaway election, and Suhey, the first candidate out, finished a distant fourth. The other incumbent to lose was Stephanie Deviney, a Chester County lawyer.

Doran received 15,085 votes; Oldsey got 13,940; and Brown got 11,403. Here’s the full list with the results.

The election results, released Friday, point to the power and reach of the Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship group, whose members paid for newspaper ads and billboards railing against Suhey and Deviney. Their mission since the Jerry Sandusky scandal erupted in November 2011 has been to unseat all the trustees who were on the board at the time.

The third seat belonged to Steve Garban, who resigned from the board last summer. His seat was never filled.

The field featured 39 candidates, some of whom ran unsuccessfully in last year’s race. This year’s field also included the former state Sen. Bob Jubelirer, who was endorsed by trustee Anthony Lubrano.

The trustees-elect will take office effective July 1.

Suhey, who played football for Penn State under Joe Paterno, offered a statement.

“It has been an honor to serve on the Penn State University board for 15 years,” Suhey said. “I am proud of my service and I am proud of this board.”

He added: “I want to offer my congratulations to the newly elected alumni trustees. I know they will be as proud as I was to represent the best and largest alumni association in the world.”

Deviney was gracious in defeat, as she congratulated the winners. She said it was too soon to say whether she would consider running again next year.

PS4RS is taking our University back from the clutches of these grifters. Great job today!

PS4RS is very organized. They are smart. They are talented. They are funded. And they are pissed off.

Also to Franco, John Ziegler, and many others - Thank You. Franco and JZ are in Bethlehem on their truth tour tonight.

Earlier today Franco blistered these idiots in the "public comments" portion of the meeting. The link to the video is below. I believe his slot is around the 20 minute mark

Sounds like good news for PSU. Like the way Franco Harris has continued on despite the media sliming. The perseverance is awesome

Oh, and it looks like my UCF will be playing PSU in Ireland in 2014.

Yeah, I’m not happy about moving that game. As a FL resident, I was already planning my tailgate menu. Move Rutgers or some other game. There are more recruits in the Orlando area than in Ireland. That much I know.

True... a lot more recruits in FL than Ireland

Plus, the Dungeon/Trampoline is a good place for football. Not Happy Valley...but we are happy when we win ;)

I’m not a PSU grad, tho my wife has a degree from there and I have other connections. I certainly didn’t feel that I knew all about everything, but I was impressed with Franco Harris’ presentation and think it’s probably for the best that he succeeded.

But would it have been too much trouble for the writer of this piece to say exactly how many trustees there are on the board??? I get that three seats on the board were being contested - but is it a three-seat board, or are there more incumbents who will be up for reelection later??? Does three seats amount to control??

It’s complicated.

5 Ex-Officio members (now only 3 who can vote)
9 elected alumni members
6 Governor appointees
6 Business & Industry - elected by B.O.T. executive council
6 Agriculture appointees

Alumni only get to elect 3 members every year to a 3 year term. The rest are untouchable.

"Tell a lie often enough and after a while you start to believe it."

Well, that's what the 11-9-11 B.O.T. and the media have done for a year and a half now. PS4RS is trying to correct that.

Franco specifically hit on this: Penn State (as a University) is now contesting Victim 6’s civil suit claims that they were in any way liable for any of js’s actions. They cite that there is no proof that anyone at Penn State acted in an effort to cover anything up or not report anything that needed reported.

This is pretty much true (imo). The problem is that if this is true, then why was Joe Paterno fired? Why was louis free’s work of fiction accepted as gospel when it came to the NCAA? Why didn’t the University defend itself against the rotten media accounts of this story?

They didn’t defend anyone or anything - they just followed the media’s lead - UNTIL it is going to cost them money. Which is another joke because they’ve (the b.o.t. and the administration) already signed on for over $100 million in damages and penalties.

John Ziegler (with zero ties to Penn State) literally knows more about this case than anyone because he hates the media and knows what they’re capable of. His website at framingpaterno.com is a tireless effort and his movie really can’t be refuted by anyone with any knowledge of the case.

Er, um, I was talking about Franco Harris, John Ziegler and the rest of that traveling minstrel show. Joseph Goebbels would be proud.

Hey asswipe, FU.

What a classy response. I must have struck a nerve.

You peddle the filth of PSU on this site and then when someone responds with reality you go ballistic.

Here is one for you:

Jerry Sandusky walks into an elementary school just as classes are let out.

A teacher approaches and asks, "Which one is yours"?

Sandusky responds, "I don't care, why don't you surprise me"!

(Rim shot)
