Amid pressure to change the nickname of his team, Washington Redskins star quarterback Robert Griffin III has ignited a digital firestorm from the left by pushing back against the “tyranny of political correctness.”
In a Twitter message, he declared: “In a land of freedom we are held hostage by the tyranny of political correctness.”
The controversy arose as Washington, D.C., Council member David Grosso prepared to introduce a non-binding resolution calling on the city’s beloved team to change its “derogatory, racist name.”
Griffin followed his original tweet a short time later with a definition of tyranny, calling it a “condition imposed by some outside agency or force,” such as “living under the tyranny of the clock” or “political correctness.”
Twitter followers erupted:
“Loyalty to local racist named team fading … fading,” wrote Bryan Weaver.
Josh Wheeler said: “Tyranny? Do we share a common reality? Get real. RT.”
@lalndonmccool wrote, “God you make it so easy to hate you”
Said Aaron Nagler: “Oh shut up. RT.”
But Griffin also received considerable support: “As a Seahawks fan, I gained a lot of respect for @RGIII today,” said one in the conversation.
Continuing the provocative Twitter dialogue, Griffin added: “If we speak … we say it the wrong way If we do not speak we are cowards.”
He later concluded: “Hate is strong. But love is even stronger. Appreciate the support people. I’m out for the night.”
At Hot Air, blogger Allahpundit said: “I wonder what they’ll do if Hillary gets elected in 2016 and the big-government gravy train keeps on rolling. Frankly, it’s long past time that the ‘Washington Capitals’ became the ‘Washington Socialists.’

I’d suggest to these critics of RG3’s comments to consider today’s increasing intrusiveness and aggressive attitude of the government while pretending GW Bush is still president.

I’ll wait to hear exactly what RG3 leaves on the record once he “clarifies” his tweets (as they often do), but if he was really rejecting leftist political correctness - well I’ve gained a lot of respect for him. And this is coming from a Dallas fan (living in DC). RG3 is an impressive individual and if he stands up against this PC nonsense, whether it’s the liberal wailing to rename the team or the fact that Christians are condemned for speaking their beliefs, then it will be hard for me to not cheer for this guy.

Redskins is racist, because everybody knows if your skin is reddish in color, you are inferior, and therefore pointing that out is bad.
That appears to be what liberals think. So much of what we call “racist” is really the result of liberals thinking everybody else is inferior, and therefore thinking is isn’t nice to insult the inferior species by pointing out their inferiority.
In the real world, a name which honors a class of people by associating something loved to that name should not be considered an “insult”.
Oh, perfect! What a creepy movie/story that was! Now, they walk among us.
RGIII is a true man, a thinking man, and a true American.
I'll be pulling for the Redskins to win a lot more this year; maybe even take another trip to FedEx Stadium as well.
Perhaps they should just change their mascot to a big, redskin potato.
