L.A. finally gets a team: 33 teams/3 levels of competition/11 teams per level. That might work.

You know what the richest game in soccer is, right?

The Championship playoff that determines the third team to get promoted to the Premier League the following season, it’s literally worth millions to the winner, even if they’re only up for one season.

And while they’re usually no single game for it, clinching 17th in EPL is worth just as much.

Or, to put it more practically, QPR is going to be stuck with an awfully large amount of payroll for a Championship club.

Anyone who watched the closing day of the EPL last season, would tell you that it was probably the most dramatic thing in sports they’d ever seen, when Manchester City grabbed the title on a late goal against QPR, right after United thought they had it won.

Of course it was way more anti-climactic this year as United had it wrapped up with like five games to spare.

But some of the best drama is also watching teams trying to avoid the drop.

Try my 2-14(2012-13) Jaguars for relegation(sp?), that will finally and hopefully get the whole team to get better....

That said, I can't see the owners or player's union going for it. It's a big benefit for the top clubs, and some of the less competitive clubs might actually prefer running on the cheap (*cough* Arizona *cough*)

Forgot the rest of the sentence: but the majority of clubs outside the top group will be quite unhappy with getting sent down to 2nd or 3rd tier.

I'm a big fan of Stefan Szymanski (if you haven't figured it out, yet). If you haven't read him, I recommend:

National Pastime: How Americans Play Baseball And the Rest of the World Plays Soccer.

He basically argues that the Europeans were thinking, "hey, let's build a brand," and the Americans were thinking, "hey, let's build a monopoly." Sad, in a way, because the world might be playing baseball right now (exceptions excepted).

That would be another sticking point -- how do you determine who gets placed where to start out, with so much money on the line at the division breaks? It'd have to be merit based, and take recent results into heavier account than from several years ago, but could you imagine putting a recent former Super Bowl winner in 2nd or 3rd division? Even with 10- or 11-team divisions, you still wouldn't have space for all of last years' playoff teams.

I hope that Man United etc sell lots of distinctive shirts so I can spot a Euro-weenie at 100 paces.

Probably not. Their top players will leave in the summer in search of top-flight teams, and their parachute payments from the Premier League will hold them for two years. After that, though, if they haven't gone back up they've got problems.

The cool thing about Reading's promotion last year was that they did it after their first set of parachute payments from the Premier League had ended.

Trust me, if you are smart enough to spot a Man U jersey, you are also smart enough not to call the person you see a weenie to his face.

So will I be a "Euro-weenie" if you see me in my Everton shirt?

"NBC has paid a reported $250 million to wrest the rights to Premier League games from Fox and ESPN for the next three years."

Well that's just great. ESPN did well with the English soccer matches. NBC will make it a drag like they do to everything else.

At least NBC will keep the British announcers, nothing worse than an American announcing soccer, I’d rather watch the game in Spanish.

The ex-US national team players always announced the game well, as did the ESPN crew from past World Cups and other tournaments.

Which explains why the QPR fans weren’t too upset when City came from behind to beat them last year....they had just learned they were “safe” so they were celebrating right along with the City fans.

No such luck for them this year, though.

I think the announcers suck. Playing in a couple World Cup matches doesn't make you a good announcer or analyst (just like playing in the Super Bowl or the World Series).

The first thought through my mind when I heard NBC signed a contract was, who will the announcers be? Do we know, yet?

As an aside, I'll mention that the American announcers during the 1994 World Cup set the sport back here for 20 years. /some exaggeration

“So will I be a “Euro-weenie” if you see me in my Everton shirt?”

I had to look up Everton, as I thought it was a brand of bottled water. I work in the Madison, WI area, and was applying the Euro-weenie descriptor to those whom I am likely to see. So, as long as you stay away from Madison, WI, you should be okay.
