Windows: It’s over, tech site declares
Fox News ^ | April 16, 2013

Calling the latest operating system a “failure” and Microsoft’s leaders “idiots,” a top tech website has proclaimed the PC era over. Windows is coming to a dead end, they say.

PC shipments collapsed in the last quarter by almost 14 percent, analysts with IDC said last week, marking the biggest drop in sales since the firm started tracking them 19 years ago. The problem, said ZDNet’s well respected Steven J. Vaughn-Nichols, isn’t the designs from the likes of HP and Dell or the size of consumer’s wallets. It’s Microsoft.

“Look at the numbers: Metro-interface operating systems have already failed,” Vaughn-Nichols wrote in an essay on the site. “Microsoft is betting all its chips on the silly notion that Metro will be the one true interface for its entire PC and device line.”

“Idiots,” he wrote. …

I kinda' like windows.

Now I'm going to have to open the door if I want to see what the weather is like outside.

I’m still using Windows 2000 Professional on my desktop. Works great.

Given Windows 8 I’m inclined to agree; but I think they can save themselves... instead of focusing on the whiz-bang UI and trying to follow the mobile crowd, bucking that trend and instead focusing on ensuring correct and stable products.

True or not, it’s hard to believe the messenger.

This guy, Steven J. Vaughn-Nichols, is a putz and has been a Windows hater for decades.

I use Windows 7 on my laptop. I have never had a problem. It’s fast and it’s a helluva lot easier to do prep for my teaching than it would be on my tablet or droid phone. I don’t see anyone claiming Apple PCs and Laptops are doomed. Tell Microsoft to fine tune Windows 7. Basically it works fine.

The Windows 8 interface - apparently licensed from McDonald’s cash register system - is a failure? How do you explain all the Happy Meal sales? Hmmmm?

Ummmm. No.

While I would happily jump on the "I hate Microsoft" bandwagon - it's pretty obvious the reason PC shipments have collapsed has nothing to do with Microsoft.

Try blaming laptops, smart phones and tablets. Especially tablets.

End of an age of fascist waste, perhaps, but not the end of the personal computer for technically inclined people.

“Windows: It’s over, tech site declares”

Written in 1993,95,98,2000,2001,2004,2006,2006,2010,2011,2012.

I’m sure on either a Mac or some Linux variant.

Only the anti-Palin people approaches this level of derangement and haven’t resorted to putting a shotgun in their mouths to prove their nuttiness.

The problem isn’t Windows 8, the problem is people that are unwilling to change with the times.

(essentially what a FReeper said to me over the weekend - I told him what body part of mine to suck on)

Even with the slump the industry is on pace to sell over 300 million PCs this year. I wanna be in a “failing” industry selling one unit to every man woman and child in the country every year... oh wait I am, sort of (software actually, but we like PC sales).

LOL. PC era over, okay....back in your padded room guy, take your medicine. So many businesses rely on PCS, and they will continue to do so, and Microsoft will continue to create new software.

Windows 8 sucks. I got in a laptop without a touchscreen. Had it had a touchscreen it might have been useful.

Its not all MS fault, sure Windows 8 is weird, until you get used to it, but the big reason for the failure of the PC market is the tablet, plain and simple.

For the vast majority of PC users, a tablet would suit their needs fine. Casual browsing, a quick note or comment to a facebook friend, reading emails.. tablets are just fine and more convenient.

...instead focusing on ensuring correct and stable products.

This is Microsoft we're talking about. As soon as something is stable they move to a whole new version because they think you will have to buy it.
