The Masters Limited Commercials: What Happened?
April 13, 2013 | ReleaseTheHounds

The Masters used to limit commercials to something like 4-6 minutes per hour of broadcasting... This year, it has to be close to 20 minutes. What Happened?

Easy.

More commercials, more money.

They are simply following the general trend in broadcast and cable TV. That trend is taking us quite rapidly to a 50/50 split between commercials and content. This Is their answer to fading viewership numbers. In fact it is a major contributor to those lower figures.

My solution for those rare times when I watch shows with commercials is either to DVR the show or toggle between two shows in order to skip past the commercials.

My husband has always told me that only men can play in the Masters! Wrong. There is a little boy playing this time, being penalized for being so bad. Nancy Lopez could beat hims with both hands tied behind her back, on one foot, without clubs!

Network programming tends to work out to 19 minutes for a half-hour show, 38 for an hour, so it seems like they’d be aligning their sports programming to the same.

I saw it the other way, to the point where I thought Alzheimers was kicking in......one period went 20 minutes or more without one single commercial break.

(But when it did break, it consisted of the usual "White people are too stoopid to figger out how to buy Gerber Life Insurance for their chirrens"....)

For shows that I want to watch in near-real-time, I start DVR'ing it, do something else for 20 minutes or so, then start watching the show. This allows me to skip commercials while still seeing things close to when its broadcast.

Initially restricting the amount of commercials airing during the live broadcast were done in response to the protests/boycotts being done against sponsors of The Masters by that woman’s group for Augusta’s lack of allowing any women members. Augusta just accepted 2 women members this past year so no worries about potential boycotts against the tournaments sponsors.

For several years they showed the Masters with no commercials. Because all the boycotts of the advertisers. After those years any commercial break seems like a lot.

I think for years they only had one sponsor...Cadillac...and the commercials were very limited. Of course, they used to only show the back nine, and only Saturday and Sunday - and so on.

My guess is that they have to pay for the live web video feeds..

The people running the Masters realized that watching the Masters is about as exciting as watching paint dry so they found commercials that are more boring than watching people play cow-pasture pool to make the Masters seem more exciting.

Joe Ford’s introduction no longer includes the disclaimer and instead features some nonsense about growing the game (yawn).

ANGC evidently gave in to CBS demands. Still, the breaks are a fraction of a normal tour event.

Women can play in the Masters but they have to qualify like everybody else.

That's hard to believe. CBS has always lost money on the deal. Even so, other networks would jump at the chance for the same deal if CBS wants to back out.
