MLB creating committee to study decline in African-American players

Major League Baseball is creating a committee to study why fewer African-Americans are playing baseball, reports Tyler Kepner of The New York Times. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday in Milwaukee.

“I don't want to miss any opportunity here,” [commissioner Bud Selig] said in a telephone interview from his office in Milwaukee. “We want to find out if we're not doing well, why not, and what we need to do better. We'll meet as many times as we need to to come to meaningful decisions.”

(snip)

“I really think our history is so brilliant when it comes to African-Americans,” Selig said. “You think about the late 1940s, the 1950s — wow. And you look at that and you say to yourself, ‘Why did it not continue, and what could we do to make sure it does continue?' ”

According to Kepner, only 8.5 percent of players on this year's opening-day 25-man rosters were African-American. The reigning world champion Giants are one of several clubs with zero black players. Recent research by Mark Armour from the Society of American Baseball Research says the highest percentage of African-American players in baseball was 19 percent in 1986.

What's to study?

Ball clubs hire the best players they can find. They don't care if they are from Minnesota, Michigan or Venezuela.

It’s PR to counter the Robinson movie. Transparent, pandering, shameful.

There don’t seem to be a lot of White Anglo players anymore as well, are they going to study that?

Single A ,Double A , AAA then pros

Three years of NCAAF then pros

One year of NCAAB then pros

What is the hardest route to a multi-million dollar contract?

That is why 5’9” African American athletes try to become an NBA point guard instead of a MLB second baseman.

Rapping has nothing to do with hitting the ball?

Who knew?

They have been displaced in that job by Hispanics, and when we start having a bunch of six foot six plus Hispanics they will displace them in basketball too! I tagged it for sarcasm because some people can't tell!

I’d say its because we don’t do little league the way we used to and if blacks go to college, they go to schools that don’t put much emphasis on baseball in their sports programs.

I know there are some damn fine black players out there.

Also are black latin American players considered black or latin American?

In other news, the NBA is creating a committee to study the decline in Caucasian-American players.

I can only assume that if the number of black and hispanic players was on the rise, meaning whites were a shrinking proportion, there'd be a similar "investigation"?

In fact, if it's like the NFL or NBA, blacks are already overrepresented compared to their percentage of the general public, which according to the discrimination industry is enough to virtually prove racism when the cleat is on the other foot (minority of interest underrepresented), so where's the cries of discrimination against whites? Hmmm? Crickets.......

No kidding, you have to work a lot harder to become a pro ball player but there is certainly no deficit of blacks who do.

I heard Rush (I think) today griping about this. He noted that no-one was ever doing any study to see why orientals aren’t in any of these sports.

The real question is, are Dominican and Haitian players considered African-American by this author?

Meant to add...

Is this a case of the author just seeing "black" and labeling all as "African-American?"

What’s to blame. How about liberal land use planning that forces developers to build on small lots within cities so there is not room to play baseball because the land is too valuable for sports fields.

You can put about 20 basketball courts in the space it takes for just one baseball field if you include the foul territory area. Maintenance cost for an outdoor basketball court is next to nothing while a baseball field can be very expensive to maintain.
