Prof Peter Higgs: Boson is not ‘God’ particle (offended by name because he’s atheist)
The Scotsman ^ | Monday 8 April 2013 00:00 | Clare McKim

Scots scientist Professor Peter Higgs has urged the public to stop calling the Higgs boson the “God particle”—because he is an atheist.

The scientist came up with the theory of a sub-atomic particle, since dubbed the Higgs boson, which would explain the mystery of how things have mass.

But he wants people to stop referring to it as the “God particle” because he does not believe the particle holding the physical fabric of the universe together is the work of an almighty creator. …

As an Atheist I can say he's an idiot.Nothing would please me more than for there to be real scientific proof of a “God”.

Most atheists I have interacted with are people who are angry with God. With them, it’s not a matter of whether He exists or not. If God did exist, they would spend their time wishing Him away.

It is the sign of a closed mind, that cannot accept the new conclusion when a more encompassing theory is introduced. Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as “settled science”, that even the most well-reasoned and supported hypothesis is subject to review and critical analysis, and should be considered with doubt in mind. Meanwhile, once some theorem has been articulated, nothing at all prevents that partial analysis from being applied in engineering terms, and therefore of practical use for human understanding of the Universe.

Otherwise we would still be living in trees and grazing off the casual fruits discovered by accident while swinging from limb to limb of those trees. Curiosity is a precious commodity.

This is just a dumb squabble about a dumb media tag.

The Higgs Boson isn’t the ‘God’ particle. It didn’t create the universe. It didn’t become Flesh and dwell among us. It cannot forgive sins.

The Higgs Boson is an amazing element of Gods creation. Let’s focus on that.

How does it explain how things have mass?

These morons know nothing.

They say the universe was smaller than an atom then exploded in the big bang and became larger than a galaxy in one trillionth trillionth of a second. they have no explanation why or how this big bang occurred.

They scientists also told us global warming was real. that has been proven a hoax . there is no warming.

A lot of those calling themselves “atheist” have a negative obsession with the idea of God. They dwell on it so much, in fact, that I wonder how they can claim they don’t believe in God. They’ll blame God for all their problems on the one hand, and on the other claim he doesn’t exist. A bizarre condition in my opinion.

The “God particle” was actually coined in a book about the search for the elusive particle. It was not a reference to religion per se, just making use of a metaphor. Mr. Higgs is being way too sensitive.

However, there is an interesting analogy to be made from this term. Without the Higgs field (of which the Higgs boson is only the force carrier), there would be no matter in the universe, only energy. Energy cannot interact with itself, only matter by way of the Pauli exclusion principal. So without the “God particle”, appearing some time after the Big Bang, the universe would be a uniform sea of energy, void and without form.

Then what is it the work of?

If he isn't already, he should definitely spend every moment awake for the rest of his life in long droning speeches giving his particle a catchy, yet nonscientific name.

Most atheists I have interacted with are people who are angry with God.

It is odd that many atheists seem to have such an emotional investment in what they term as a mythical being.

Why invest so much energy in battle with people you think foolish for believing in a mythical being. Unless a person is trying to evangelize you why discuss God at all. I certainly do not spend time discussing or thinking of the existence of Zeus.

Speaking of evangelism; why the evangelistic fervor for so many atheist? Why does it bother them so much for another person to believe in God?

“the particle holding the physical fabric of the universe together”

So that’s it! The one particle responsible for it all.

And when do they discover the next important particle that explains it all?

Perhaps they should name it after him, and call it the "a-hole" particle.
