New Report: 48 Percent of First Children Born to Unwed Mothers

(CNSNews.com) – Calling it “The Great Crossover,” a report by academics and social activists shows that for the first time in history the median age of American women having babies is lower than the median age of marriage – 25.7 and 26.5, respectively.

These “dramatic changes in childbearing,” the report states, results in dramatic statistics about American children. Among them, 48 percent of first births are by unwed mothers, and by age 30 two-thirds of American women have had a child, typically out of wedlock.

Kay Hymowitz, an author of the report and a William E. Simon Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, said at an event to release the report on Wednesday at the Brookings Institution, that it reflects how the view of what marriage is about has changed.

This includes young adults who say marriage and children “are two separate things,” Hymowitz said.

We get to subsidize the BS lifestyle of all these losers. No wonder we’re going broke.

My niece, who has an engineering degree and a job as a Program Manager, had her first child with a wimpy wuss of a boy. The boy’s ambition was to be a comic book artist. He was childish despite his 17 year old age. She had no intention of marrying him. She apparently decided she was ready for a child. The child she had has the same go-getter attitude of her dad who has made a poor father despite his desire to be better. For example, he fed the child on an all candy diet and didn’t take care of the child’s teeth. Five thousand dollars later, it’s all fixed and the father is finally taking care of them when he has her.

The niece has married a good man. The shared parentage of the out of wedlock baby has tied all three parties to a single locale where nobody has a good job. The problems are probably much more than that. I don’t understand why my niece did this and I suspect that she doesn’t either. I suspect that all her black friends (she’s white) were having out of wedlock babies so she felt left out.

Probably half the marriages in this country today have a son or daughter as ringbearer or flower girl.

Another big lie...making abortion easy and legal was going to stop all these unwed births, but the number is higher than ever. Just like amnesty will stop illegal immigration...NOT!

Like in Europe, official marriage in the US is rapidly becoming a thing of the past.

Judging by the Birth announcements in the paper, it could actually be much higher than 48%.

agree w/ you! We constantly remind our teen daughter that choices have consequences, and our actions affect others. We have been blessed in that our young sons are married and then had their children, but I have a niece whose son is now almost 7 and she never married the boy’s father but instead is now living with another man who already had a child from a previous relationship. No marriages in that whole mess. Our teen has witnessed all of this, and she has seen how her cousin suffers from the lack of consistency and certainty in his life. She also knows how much of a financial struggle it has been for one of her brothers as he is a new parent with a wife in college and they juggle work and school and baby responsibilities. Seeing all these people that we love in such situations has made her even more determined to finish college and make better choices.

My heart breaks for my niece, my grand nephew, my son & his family. We have helped when we could and when we should have. Other times we have had to let them go their own way and let God see them thru it. I have to say, I am so proud of my son as he has really become a responsible husband and father thru all of this. My niece still struggles and my prayers are still lifted for all of them.

So heartbreaking the number of children being raised without 2 parents (mom and dad!) in the home. I know this has caused so much of our societal drift...

Its sickening...It fills me with dismay.

There have been times in history when society provided a bulwark of morality, or at least a public facade of morality which caused shame to people who put themselves in such situations.

In the United States (indeed the world), public and private morality has melted like early spring snow. It was what, 60 or 70 years ago when widespread acceptance, or even that such things would be publicly discussed, of abortion and faggotry was beyond unthinkable. Now, its forced down your throat along with a host of other horrors, with a populace that cares not a bit that it is submerging with increasing speed in a morace of filth, disease, dishonor, and godlessness.

It is depressing, and yet it makes me so grateful that God has given me the faith to weather such times.

I was not married when I had my son who is my only child. My husband (his father) and I married 5 months later and have been married for nearly 25 years. Do I recommend this? Of course not, but all things truly do work out in the end when you put your mind to it.

weird how drug use is up
teens having babies up
abortions I was told up
kids being born out of wedlock, up

Oh hang on we’ve had nothing but a liberal far left liberal-tarian agenda from pansy boy who hates the real family and would use turd pokers etc to have us think marriage is now different.

He saw his father say piss off and did not want him and now hates the family but yet I grew up in foster homes and love the family , married 17 years, great kids.

ever seen many of these college boys today, they;re all pansies, skinny little girlie fairies.Even worse when we went to Boston and up north

I’m just hoping that my daughter when older can still find a decent man who is not afriad of getting dirty, has brains, works well and for crying out loud doesn;t wear spandex and a helmet when going on a bicycle

totally agree.
It takes work to raise kids, and raising kids is not about letting them go to their rooms watch their own TV, go on their own PC and play playstation.

It’s about talking to your kids, warning them off the dangers of the left wing agenda around them , telling them what family is etc.

It;s hard work but the kids are doing well, all great grades, letters off top colleges like Stanford and George mason and yet the oldest is only 9th grade

I’m sick of seeing s called parents keep going out while their kdis stay at home or be raised off the grand parents, or they take weekends while the kdis get shipped off or even go out to dinner and leave the kdis behind.

No wonder kids today are screwed up and good for you and your wife, it sounds you;re doing a great job

Somewhere I saw a photo-grouping of American “male” superstars versus European MALE superstars. The Americans looked like boys, wimpy boys at that. The European stars were hairy-chested men. How dis this happen? What happened to The Duke, Arnold The Muscle and Humphrey Bogart types? Dicaprio? Give me a break!

That’s stupid to attribute poor behavior to ‘black friends.’

You make every stereotype of conservatives a reality with posts like this.

my oldest is 15 he;s ROTC, got an award off the sheriff last week, gets all A’s works out, has bene boxing since 5 years old, got the state champ about 3 or 4 years ago and is a strong guy, wants marine recon or seals and he told me even in ROTC there are mostly pansy boys.

I’m hoping he doesn;t join as the military is not what it used to be.

My wife saw a bunch of boys back in England all had short hair, looked like they could fight, did not mind being dirty and said what on earth is wrong wiht boys today.

Even college boys who are older than my oldest are like girls for the most part
