A better question might be “What is a Sardine?”

Sardines, or pilchards, are common names used to refer to various small, oily fish within the herring family of Clupeidae.[2] The term sardine was first used in English during the early 15th century and may come from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, around which sardines were once abundant.[3][4]

The terms sardine and pilchard are not precise, and what is meant depends on the region. The United Kingdom’s Sea Fish Industry Authority, for example, classifies sardines as young pilchards.[5] One criterion suggests fish shorter in length than 6 inches (15 cm) are sardines, and larger ones pilchards.[6] The FAO/WHO Codex standard for canned sardines cites 21 species that may be classed as sardines;[7] FishBase, a comprehensive database of information about fish, calls at least six species “pilchard”, over a dozen just “sardine”, and many more with the two basic names qualified by various adjectives.

I've never had sardines -- by the look of them, I think I probably wouldn't like them much. Those eyes...Blech.

No, gimme a good piece of red meat any day...Excepting Fridays, of course.

Most definitely! When I was a kid my Mom would make sardine spread for sandwiches and i liked them.

Later on in life, I was re-introduced to eating sardines straight from the can and place them on saltines. I liked the sardines with chilis the best!

This thread got me wanting some again...

Not really. Beef jerky is OK, though. It’s almost the same thing except that you can’t pack very many cows into those little bitty cans.

I love sardines packed in mustard.
As a side note to sardines, King Oscar is also famous for his contribution to science in a roundabout way as the patron of one of the earlier scientific prizes for demonstrable contributions in the advancement of mathematics. There is fantastic book that I bought years ago called “Celestial Encounters” that describes the build-up to the discoveries of set theory and chaos theory and related mathematics discoveries.

The expiration date is usually just a CYA move by the Mfrs. While nutritional content may degrade after that, a sealed and undamaged container will last a lot more than....t ashree years.     =;^)

Best bet I've found in recent years are those packed by/in Thailand. That's the old Russian fishing fleet ~ they bought it and refurbished it, brought everything up to modern standards.

Still the same brand names you always found ~ but now there are varieties of hot sauce.

I’ve always wondered how they get those sardines so neatly packed into the can.

Go ahead, remove them without breaking and then put them back as you found them.
