Free Republic | March 15, 2013 | gr

Posted on 03/15/2013 3:25:57 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

If the agent orange doesn’t work, next time you have to run outside without trousers on make a detour through the new garden. That should shock the Bermuda right outta there (ducking!).

Yep. Last year I begged a half-cup if the bird sunflowers from the neighbor lady across the street and planted them. Wound up with a bunch. They started just fine.

Those are the oil heavy small Russians.

Not to worry; I’m also planting potatoes and carrots to serve with them. ;-)

Do you use an innoculant on your peas? I'll be using innoculant on the peanuts this year because it's been so long since peanuts were grown on this ground.

And since I've got it in hand... I'm going to use it on my pinto beans, too.

Have you thought about dehydrating them?

The husky cherry tomato transplants are happy (knock on wood) but they didn’t put on last year until right before the Nov. freeze. They are my favs, just like candy, but not when they sulk and not give me anything all summer. The slicers and romas didn’t put on either but the yellow pears went crazy growing to the roof. It’s all or nothing.

We used to grow peanuts commercially. But I’ve never done anything for the garden peanuts. Just poke ‘em in the ground and they’re happy. Just make sure they get lots of sun and sandy soil.

Grand-dad used to grow peanuts on this ground, and I think I remember seeing one crop, but this is the first time in at least 45 years there will be peanuts here.

Good sandy soil for them, and plenty of sun. I went ahead and got the innoculant this first time, but won't do that next year, once the bacteria are established.

The innoculant is supposed to be good for all of the legume family, so I'm going to try it on the pintos this year. I grow 3 sister (corn, beans, squash) every year, and I should know if the innoculant helps.

Funny...so have I! By the MINUTE it seems, some days!

So much has changed for me these past few years...ALL GOOD.

Work takes up the bulk of my time, now. Got promoted last year this time, so this is my FIRST SPRING SEASON where it’s all on MY shoulders to make it work. Eeek!

And LUCKILY I found me a ‘Junior Version of Tubebender’ to fall in love with and plan the rest of my life with...which takes up the few free hours I have each week.

You would love him. He’s just everything I’ve been wanting in a man. Hard working, farmer, craftsman, owns acres and acres of land, sweet, kind, smart, funny, good lookin’ - well, you know - JUST LIKE YOU, LOL!

Life. Is. Good. I. Am. Blessed. :)

Hardware/garden shop got their BULK SEED POTATOES IN!!

Yay!

SO today I got 20 lbs of four different varieties, as soon as those are dirt happy, I’ll probably do another twenty. My next door neighbor has turned up a ton of dirt and is anxious to get into it also!

I am so looking forward to this season. This will be the first time in a few years that I will be able to start from seed and plant in an area that I think will be warm and sunny enough to grow plants successfully. There is nothing like harvesting home grown herbs, vegetables and fruits.
