The police are draconian in enforcing this...to the point that its an insanely dangerous.

That way, when you hit the car in the left lane, the police will be right there to take care of things!

If you are passing someone then there is no issue, as you said you will get over when you have completed your pass.

The issue is the morons that sit oblivious in the left lane while traffic piles up behind them and the entire world has to pass them on the right.

"So, a warning, we get to pack heat without a license ~ please be polite and MOVE LEFT to get out the way! " Thanks for being an irresponsible gun owner. Way to give the lefty gungrabbers an example to hold up. TC

Some backwoods spots in the far West might have a keep right law but not for multi-lane divided highways on the East Coast! Here is a little light reading for you:

Maryland KEEP RIGHT Law

2010 Maryland Code TRANSPORTATION TITLE 21 - VEHICLE LAWS - RULES OF THE ROAD - Subtitle 3 - Driving on Right Side of Roadway; Overtaking and Passing; Use of Roadway Section 21-301 - Driving on right side of roadway -- "(a) General rule.- On every roadway that is wide enough, a vehicle shall be driven on the right half of the roadway....(SNIP)"

Enjoy.

She was on the right half. She just wasn’t on the right quarter.

People really do keep to the right half of the highway and out of the way of oncoming traffic. That's why so many highways are built so wide these days ~ but when you have left hand exits all over the place, you must keep left to use them.

Don't be bringing some countryroads environmental law into play when we are discussing interstate quality highways.

We are not having trouble with lefty gungrabbers around here ~ that's one of the advantages of not living in lefty gungrabber territory.

BTW, we have far less irresponsible firearms use on the public highways than Texas does ~ if you must know ~ but they have restrictions. Around here be polite and there'll be no trouble. And move left at intersections to let folks enter the highway. Another one, is if there's a cop parked on the right berm, move left to get out the way ~ that's the law!

If the person you get irratated with in the left is doing the SPEED LIMIT, then they AREN’T “slower traffic”... WHAT PART OF “SPEED LIMIT” DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

The ones NOT doing the speed limit!

“Slower” is a relative term. For the sake of safety and in the interest of efficiency, vehicles are required to travel with the flow of traffic, i.e. neither impeding or tailgating. In my state it is illegal for semi-trucks or vehicles pulling trailers to travel in the right lane on roads of three or more lanes and all vehicles are only allowed to use the right lane when passing or if it is the only lane available.

With quaint local customs. The rules or roads only 1.5 lanes wide are simply not applicable to a roadway 11 lanes wide.

You’re probably right. Once when I cracked a felloe, only a few other travelers passed while I was waiting for the wainwright.

I-95 isn’t full of left-turn exits in Maryland. There are a couple, like northbound I-95 to westbound I-495 south of baltimore, and one or two maybe through the city.

When you get further north, they have the rest stops in the center. But I doubt this woman was near a left exit, or the police would not have ticketed her.

There are two big rules I keep telling my kids. First, don’t pass on the right, because that is one of those rules the police love to hit you for. Second, move over if you aren’t following another car already. Let the fast people by on the left, so they don’t have to break the law by passing on the right.

Now, for me, my rule is that if I am in the right lane, I will drive without regard to whether there are cars on the far left going slower. I figure if there’s a lane between us, I’m not really “passing on the right”, I’m just driving in my lane. If there’s a car in the center, I’ll actually move over 2 lanes to pass on the left, and then go back to the right.

And I do sometimes pass on the right, when it is clear that a car won’t move over, especially if a bunch of other cars have already passed on the right.

I like driving on the left because it is the safest lane. You only have to watch people merging from one side, and have a shoulder to bail out. The right lane is almost as good except for the people merging in and swerving through 3 lanes to get to an exit they forgot. The middle lanes creep me out, because people pass me on the left AND on the right, and others will tailgate if you aren’t going fast enough, and people are always swerving into your lane from both sides.

One day, I figured if I got a “reckless driving” ticket for going too fast in the left lane, I would have argued that I was in the left because it was the safest place, and I was driving the same speed as others in the left which was the safest course of action, and that the law is not intended to put my own life in danger.

The Ivary (Smith) Tower in the foreground, and the Space Needle in the background kind of give it away. Nice shot of Lake Onion.

Sounds like they charged her incorrectly, hitting her for driving “10 mph or more below the speed limit” when she was only doing 2mph under.

If she was blocking traffic, and they charged her with obstructing traffic, that would make more sense. Assuming she was actually blocking traffic.

Generally I think that law should be applied if some idiot in the left lane decides to pace the other cars in the center and right lanes to create a rolling blockade. I’ve been behind people like that before, they think it is their job to keep the rest of us from speeding.

I think we should allow people to go much faster if they like, and then have fines for accidents based on speed over the “recommended” limit.

So, instead of a speed limit of 65, they could have a “recommended limit 55, max 85”; if you are going 85 and have an accident, they charge you $1000 and suspend your license.

That way, we get to punish people who actually cause harm, while not restricting everybody’s liberty because of some lowest common denominator of unskilled drivers.

And probably pacing the car in the right. They speed up until they reach someone in the right lane and then slow down to their speed. It’s a sign they are not paying attention.

Hate to say it, but I remember when the Smith Tower was the tallest building in town. At one time it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi.
