$750K of Whisky Poured Down Drain

Newser) – Who knew the Pogues' "Streams of Whiskey" was more than just a metaphor? A mix-up at a Chivas Brothers plant in Scotland in the wee hours of Tuesday morning resulted in around 4,750 gallons of whisky—about $750,000 worth—getting flushed down the drain, reports the Scottish Sun. The mistake occurred during the night shift; workers washing out the equipment were supposed to drain the water and cleaning solution from the tanks, but the whisky got released instead.

The BBC reports that sewage workers noticed the intense smell and were working to ID the source when the plant contacted them; the Sun notes that the mix-up wasn't discovered until 11am. Scottish Water is investigating, and a rep for the water works notes that, "Discharging large volumes of alcohol into the sewer network can have an adverse impact on waste water treatment processes, particularly during dry, cold weather."

Tiss true, single malts are superior to blends.

But a good sour mash beats them all.

24 replies and not a single mention that Ted Kennedy is deeply saddened and has been sober for over 3 years now.

I’m hoping that $750K is the loss from one shift(vs a month’s supply of product). In that case, the loss can be overcome by the remaining 1094 shifts this year.

I'm sure Fat Teddy, whichever place he is, will find this news most distressing.

Scotch tastes like horse piss. Now if it was 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle bourbon, then I would really be upset. Especially since I can never find any.

If the ocean were whiskey and I were a duck, I'd dive to the bottom and never come up.....

I worked at a dairy where a mistake at a three way stopcock sent 700 gallons of chocolate milk into the sewage treatment plant. It was quite a sight to see it spraying from the nozzles there.

One local distillery sent a (train)carload of peach brandy down the drain some years ago.Probably about equal to what the workers stole in a year.
