Newser) – Who knew the Pogues' "Streams of Whiskey" was more than just a metaphor? A mix-up at a Chivas Brothers plant in Scotland in the wee hours of Tuesday morning resulted in around 4,750 gallons of whisky—about $750,000 worth—getting flushed down the drain, reports the Scottish Sun. The mistake occurred during the night shift; workers washing out the equipment were supposed to drain the water and cleaning solution from the tanks, but the whisky got released instead.
The BBC reports that sewage workers noticed the intense smell and were working to ID the source when the plant contacted them; the Sun notes that the mix-up wasn't discovered until 11am. Scottish Water is investigating, and a rep for the water works notes that, "Discharging large volumes of alcohol into the sewer network can have an adverse impact on waste water treatment processes, particularly during dry, cold weather."
You know somebody’s going to get fired over that. They’re probably already fired.
I’m not much of a drinker, but losing 3/4 of a million dollars of any product with zero chance of any recovery is never a good thing.
There's been a toxic spill in Scotland and they need me for clean up.
Meh, it’s just Chivas.
Meh, it’s just Chivas.
Thanks, I needed that.
WHY GOD WHY
If the wind is right when that fume cloud hits Ireland the island might tip over from the rush of people to the west...
I meant east... (facepalm)
It was headed to the sewers anyways.
However, most people filter it through their kidneys first.
That explains all the catfish doing the hokey pokey during the wee hours yesterday.
Precisely. It's not as though this world treasure burnt down.
Oh, well. It was just blended Scotch, not much of a loss to the world. Had it been a good single malt like Lagavulin, now that would have been a tragedy!
Had it been a good single malt like
There, fixed it.
Worked in a biologics plant making human albumen for human injection back in the 80s. One clown known for having a smoke lunch on the second shift came back from lunch with his usual bloodshot eyes and proceeded to pump 800 gallons of near final product into a outside dirty holding tank used for reclaiming dirty processed ethanol. Many tens of thousand of dollars were lost and begging on his knees, this guy kept his job.
De gustibus non disputandum.
(Of course, that presumes one has taste, which us single-malt drinkers do. . .)
I guess thats why they have rules again’st drinking on the job. :-)
But I bet there are some very happy rats.
Tiss true, single malts are superior to blends.
But a good sour mash beats them all.
24 replies and not a single mention that Ted Kennedy is deeply saddened and has been sober for over 3 years now.
Somehow this reminds me of this old movie...WHISKEY GALORE.
This is incompetence “of Obamaian proportions”
I’m hoping that $750K is the loss from one shift(vs a month’s supply of product). In that case, the loss can be overcome by the remaining 1094 shifts this year.
Scotch tastes like horse piss. Now if it was 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle bourbon, then I would really be upset. Especially since I can never find any.
I worked at a dairy where a mistake at a three way stopcock sent 700 gallons of chocolate milk into the sewage treatment plant. It was quite a sight to see it spraying from the nozzles there.
One local distillery sent a (train)carload of peach brandy down the drain some years ago.Probably about equal to what the workers stole in a year.
Just watering it down enough to send it to Maker’s Mark.
Oh the humanity!
