Vanity! Any recommendations on electronic earmuffs?
Vanity | 2/17/2013 | Wingy

For years I have used a plain Jane set of earmuffs when target shooting, but it's time to step up to the newfangled electronic type. 60 year old ears deserve some pampering. That said, I was hoping that you good folks had some advice, recommendations, or warnings. You guys are the best at this sort of thing.

PS. This is my very first vanity so if I screwed it up, have mercy, and any passing mod please fix it.

PPS. If it makes any difference, I shoot .223, 30.06 and some shotgun. Also a variety of handguns from .44 mag to .22.

You signed up in 1998 and this is your first Vanity?

What are you, a robot???

(I have no idea what the best e-muffs are but I think your vanity looks OK).

I got a fairly inexpensive Caldwell model from Midway that work. I suspect the more expensive ones do a better job of passing quieter sounds with good fidelity like for hunting. I just wanted the shot sound reduction while hearing normal stuff and they work fine for that. Range commands and conversation are easy to hear. Works fine for .308.

No, not a robot, but I comment on many things, and while I certainly appreciate the posters here, I never had much of anything to post. Also, at some times vanities were frowned on and I try to abide by the rules of the house.

“You signed up in 1998 and this is your first Vanity?”

Yeah, something mighty odd about that!
Break out the Nerf bats, pipe the Sturgeon Flutes, Light the green fire, wear the nasal marshmallow sign!

It’s a vanity hazin time!
/ just kidding.
Seriously, your first and only vanity?
*sigh*

Multi ping, a question about electronic shooters ear muffs, those active canceling things.
Not the only thread about it:

Also, let’s celebrate Wingy and their apparently first vanity.
[I thought the ‘98 signups all had at least seven vanities by now! That’s just wrong!]

I’ve been researching them for a purchase also.
Best I can tell the Howard Leight Impact UVXR-01526 is the best for the buck. $50-60.
They are slim enough to use with a rifle. The downer of the Peltors. Oh, the Peltors have 2 volume controls, annoying.
They don’t attenuate as much as a good pair of muffs though.

I’ve seen some very expensive models but $200+ for electronic muff is too much for me.

I use the Caldwell E-muffs from Midway USA. They’re inexpensive and work great. For your .30-06 and your .44mag, you may want to supplement the muffs with some earplugs, for additional protection.

May be a “Class of ‘98,” but there’s “Oldie” Class of ‘98 and “Newbie” Class of ‘98. This one’s a nOOb.

Ah, that explains the lack of vanity posts!
[Class of 2000 tends to either go overboard or not at all.]

I’ve a friend who’s a Boulder County Sheriff’s Sargent, and he swears the el cheapo Harbor Freight active muffs work just fine. They also use standard batteries.

I shoot a 30-.06 and .44 regularily along with 9mm and .22.
I'm 66 and the plain Jane muffs, as long as they are seated properly seem to work OK.
Last hearing test shows a big negative spike at around 17 Khz, that was work related years ago, not from shooting and cause some tinnitus.
