Jerry Saltz: George W. Bush Is a Good Painter!
Vulture ^ | 2/8/13 | Jerry Saltz

OMG! Pigs fly. I like something about George W. Bush. A lot. After spending more than a decade having almost physiological-chemical reactions anytime I saw him, getting the heebie-jeebies whenever he spoke — after being sure from the start that he was a Gremlin on the wing of America — I really like the paintings of George W. Bush.

A hacker today released what are apparently Bush family photos and three of W's own "in-progress" paintings. They all look finished to me. We knew Winston Churchill was a painter. But George W. Bush?! Our W.! I didn't even think he had an inner life, let alone a muse that called him to art! Gawker calls them "awkward" and "simple." Gawker is wrong — way wrong.

I saw only three images. One of W in the act of painting. I love that he wears a baseball cap. Better yet, he paints in the weight room! There are mirrors and equipment all around. What other artist paints in his own weight room!? He is putting touches with a little brush on what looks like a stone house, maybe his own Texas ranch, maybe a settler's farm. [Update: The building is actually St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport, Maine, the seaside town where Bush spent much of his childhood.] The architecture strikes me as real and imagined: a small central home with maybe an addition, and a large round silo. There appear to be two crosses atop this overall structure, one on the main house and a larger one on the silo. American Gothic indeed.

The purity of the lone American farmer. Individuality. No neighbors in sight. Alone on one's own land. It is the isolation of rural America writ in bricks and mortar. Clearly this is not a poor person's home.

Frankly, I wouldn’t let W paint my barn - and it needs it.

Really, that’s quite good. I wonder what medium it was done in?

Oh for God's sake - what a bunch of baloney.

It's like defining wine - “with a hint of appleberry and a smidgen of pepper and a finish of slight pomegranate” - so many things imputed by the voyeur that most likely weren't ever intended in the first place.

Either you like it or you don't.

Who is this idiot? He describes a Church as a manor house, after he’s told us it is a Church.

the paintings aren’t that great... then again GW isn’t a professional artist. it’s a hobby.

then again I can understand why the writer thinks they are completed and amazing... artwork today looks like some that was produced by splashing paint on an epileptic patient while they have a siezure on a canvas.

I love the signature. He’s a humorous guy, and I have to laugh at his subjects, himself in the shower, and I suspect those are his legs in the tub. I can’t draw a stick figure so I think his art is really great, even better if he enjoys the process.

How could anyone viewing the painting of the church NOT immediately know it as a church??? That says all about the author I need to know.

We will know soon if this strikes a chord in the Liberal World. Barry will either state that he “paints all the time” and then in a week or two, pics of “the One” painting will be released, or his “email” will be hacked and pics of Fantastic Art Pieces wills be plastered on Gawker.

I can just imagine what Barry will have painted.....

Washing off all the Democrat monkeypoo that was constantly flung his way.
