Your idea about Savage is very good! They’re very precise out of the box with plenty of add ons after market. The trigger is extremely good. Unlike the Remington you can accurizable it yourself, no machinery needed. You can easily set headspace and rebbl if you like. There’s just a lot to like and the price is right.

I recently got a Savage Predator Max in .223, it was very affordable. I was amazed at the out of the box accuracy and the crispness of the trigger. Go with a Savage with the accustock and accutrigger and you will not be disappointed.

I have had several Remington 700’s and they seem to all have a 9 pound lawyer installed on the trigger. You can adjust it, but not as well as the Savage IMO.

I shoot a 700 in .308 for dear and elk. You may want something a little flatter shooting and lighter for predators in the open. Then again I took down a coyote with a .22 out of my bedroom window. What's the predator you are going after anyway?

Remington 700 is an excellent rifle model. I have one in .30-06 and one in 7mm Remington magnum. You can’t go wrong with a 700.

Remington Police Sniper Bull barrel in .308 with a 12X5 Nikkon scope is a tack driver. When the coyotes are within 400 yards and closer it sets itself up, calls me and shows me where to shoot. If I don't move the coyote is dead. Jokes aside, its the best shooting rifle I have ever handled and is more rifle than I am shooter.

I’ve recently heard of some accuracy issues with the 700 due to the bedding. I’m considering a 300 winmag myself. heard some good things about that one.

I won a Model 700 Remington .308 last year in a local hunt club raffle. It has a composite stock and is very light. I equipped it with a 3x9 Leupold Vari X (sp?)1. The rifle is specifically tuned up for 125 grain ballistic tip rounds which I load myself. They travel in the neighborhood of 4000 fps and I can cover 100 yard groups of three with a dime. It is sweet. I also have a .243 made by Savage that comes in a package with scope included that shoots real good also. Both are fine additions to my collection. The Savage package deals may be more affordable if you are looking to save a buck.

Savage works very well in the long range department. 938 yard prairie dog kill with a 243 last year.

Personally, I’d go with the Scar 17s heavy. Can’t go wrong with that. It’s the Ferrari of .308s.

You might want to consider an upgrade to a 30/06. It is a bit more versatile that the .308 regarding the number of loads you can buy or work up and packs a little more punch.

Plus the AMMO virtually universal in the US.

It is my opinion that for the money Savage makes the best out of the box bolt guns. I would say that .308 is a little overkill as far as coyotes go. But if you plan on also deer hunting with it is ok.

Most coyote hunters are now using AR-15’s in various calibers because many times you may have the chance to get a double and an AR is the ticket for a fast follow up shot.

My personal coyote gun is an AR-15 chambered in .204 Ruger. I like that caliber because it shoots flat enough that I don’t have to be concerned with hold over untill I am beyond 300 yds.

You should really consider a SAI M1A .308 Winchester! Best shooting gun you will ever own. Good for short range and anything out to 1000 yds! One of the best rifles ever made! One of the best looking rifles too!

For your expected type of shooting, I think a model 700 in .260 Remington would be ideal.

The .308 is a good all around rifle but the .260 is an excellent long range or predator caliber and kicks less.

Of course .308 ammo is a lot more popular.

I have a 700. The action is loose and damn thing hurts my shoulder.

Accurate as hell, hurts after 25 rounds, action pisses me off.

Still, I can make about 25 rounds group under 1” using a Leupold MK IV.

I am getting the new 783 and I’ll switch the Luepold over to that and then send the 700 out for a new bolt that is way smoother.

The 783 has a dampening system that will help with my anticipation and flinching from the pain. It has a better Bolt that glides instead of stuttering as the 770 does.

When I get the 770 fixed I’ll put the Luepold back on it and fit the 783 with a Brown and Schmidt.
