Japanese Gun Control

I. Introduction

In October 1992, in Louisiana, a Japanese exchange student named Yoshihiro Hattori went into the wrong house on the way to a Halloween party. The homeowner's wife screamed for help and the homeowner drew his .44 pistol and yelled for the student to 'freeze!' Not understanding the American idiom that 'freeze!' means 'Don't move or I'll shoot', the student continued advancing towards the homeowner. The homeowner pulled the trigger and shot him dead.[1] While the incident initially attracted only brief attention in the national American press, the shooting horrified Japan; hundreds of thousands of Japanese have signed petitions calling for the United States to implement gun prohibition, and Hattori's parents have announced plans to begin working with the American lobby, Handgun Control Inc.[2]

To many Japanese, and to many Americans, it is simply incomprehensible that the United States has not implemented strict gun controls or prohibitions along the Japanese model. Gun control in Japan is the most stringent in the democratic world. The weapons law begins by stating 'No-one shall possess a fire-arm or fire-arms or a sword or swords', and very few exceptions are allowed.[3] Gun ownership is minuscule, and so is gun crime. As gun crime in other nations increases, many advocates of gun control urge that Japan's gun control policy be imitated.[4]

But before other nations, particularly the United States, decide that Japanese-style gun control is the magic elixir for the disease of gun violence, it is necessary to understand more fully what Japanese gun control is. Exactly what kinds of controls on guns are imposed by the police? How do the controls fit into the context of the overall relationship between the people and the Government? How has Japan...

Japan has more than 30,000 suicides a year — one of the highest rates among industrialized nations. On average, someone in Japan dies by his own hand every 15 minutes. Usually a man. The Aokigahara Forest is the most common place to commit suicide in Japan.

Yeah, these are the people we want to take societal advice from. NOT!

The Japanese lie on their crime stats....

I was on Okinawa and saw a bunch of Yakusa armed with pistols try to attack the Air Force security team on Kadena.

Lets say that they failed....horribly.

It was not reported as a gun crime....it was reported as a gang crime.

Same with suicides etc....

Instead of using guns, the police rely on their black belts in judo or their police sticks.

That would work *swell* here.

ROTFLOLOL.

I'm not certain low age of consent is indicative of moral depravity -- take, as a counterexample, the Jewish Bar/Bat Mitzvah is at 13/12, and they should be able to marry at that time. ("After this age, children bear their own responsibility for Jewish ritual law, tradition, and ethics and are able to participate in all areas of Jewish community life.")

I don't care what language you speak, if someone yells "BLAAARGGGH" in my face with a gun pointed at me I will assume it means, "Stop or I will shoot."

I belong to an anime fansub group and believe me, their porn called hentai and doujins (doujin is the parody version of any existing manga or comic) is mostly hardcore. Every year they have a porn manga convention called C (insert number) that is just Fd up.

Not to mention rape, one of the most under-reported crimes in Japan. I read that many Japanese women place men’s shoes outside their doors to give the impression that a man is inside and they counsel foreign women to do the same.

They were also stupid enough to start a war with a nation nearly ten times their size with an industrial capacity they couldn’t have even begun to understand if they tried AND because of this imperialist arrogance, martial stupidity and racial ignorance are the only nation in history to have ever experienced the offensive power and devastation of nuclear weapons. Yeah. The Japs are somebody we should listen to.

The Japs are somebody we should listen to.

If the Nips are happy in their bondage as slaves, so be it. Americans -- or at least right-thinking Americans -- cherish freedom and our God-given liberty, guaranteed by guns. And since ober 99% of the Japanese don't believe in the one and only God, I suppose that's why they're not much for guns...or freedom!

Too bad for the kid, but come ON. Let's say I'm in Japan as an exchange student. I just walk on in to someone's house without being asked in, a woman screams in terror and the man comes out pointing a samurai sword at me. What is the first thing I do? What is the first thing ANY sane person would do? I back away slowly with my hands in the air, giving the international sign for "oh crap, sorry, no threat here". What does this kid do? Keeps walking toward the guy. Good shoot, I'd say. People that stupid must leave the gene pool immediately.

Are you sure about that? Do you really know Swiss gun laws?

Exactly. Was the kid high as a kite? He sure didn't appear to have any wits about him. Twenty years on and some still don't get that? He would have suffered a similar fate if he had intruded upon a Swede.
