Fauja Singh, an Indian-born British citizen, was dubbed the 'Turbaned Tornado' after taking up running at the age of 89. He says this year's Hong Kong Marathon will be his last.

A 101-year-old Sikh regarded as the world's oldest marathon runner will quit after one final run at next month's Hong Kong race, media reports said on Thursday.

Indian-born British national Fauja Singh admitted age was finally catching up with him and he had decided not to compete after the Hong Kong Marathon on February 24, five weeks before his 102nd birthday on April 1.

"But I will keep running for at least four hours daily after that," Singh, who lives in Ilford, England, told the Times of India newspaper during a visit to his home state of Punjab.

Thanks for sharing. I have always had a dream that I would be back to running regularly (but not marathon distances!) in retirement, but not sure the joints are going to hold up and not sure I’ll ever get to “retirement”.

My daughter ran in the KC underground race on Sunday, was sort of stunned to see the results, that she beat a 77 year old runner by just a couple seconds.

Its even odds that the air pollution in HK will kill him first.

Thats just amazing...heck I can barely do a 5k at 60.

On the one hand you respect that...but there’s a piece somewhere that says “showoff...”

:]

I can’t wait for the 90-something marathoner to claim Singh was juicing!

I have seen marathoners “retire” to 1/2 marathons or sprint triathalons.

Four hours of running by a 101 year old should get him to the end of his driveway & back. :)

If you are worried about your joints, check out "natural running" or "forefoot strike" running.

I just started running again last year after taking off twenty years because of foot problems...and so far I have had NO joint problems.

That said, it takes forever to condition your muscles and tendons to this style of running.

In 1971 a man over the age of 100 was teaching people how to run the Honolulu Marathon. I don’t know when he died, but he was well over 101 when I last heard about him. He had been a maitre d at a San Francisco hotel till he was 99 or 100.
