93-year-old war hero says he would spank teens who burglarized, trashed his home

HOUSTON -- Ninety-three-year-old Elbert Wood came home from a doctor’s appointment Monday morning to find his home burglarized and vandalized with spray paint.

The World War II hero pointed to the furniture, walls, windows, paintings and TV, now tagged with graffiti.

“I never heard of anything like this before," Wood said.

If he’d been home when the crooks broke in, Wood said, “I’d have tried to kill ‘em.”

Two of the suspects were caught just down the street with red paint on their hands, spray can caps in their pockets and stuff stolen from Wood’s home. One teen admitted to breaking into the house, but claims he didn’t vandalize it.

“What can I say? I didn’t spray paint his house," he said.

Turns out the suspects in custody are just 13 and 16 years old. We can’t release their names because they are juveniles.

One of them started crying when Wood’s son and daughter-in-law showed up at the scene.

Wood’s daughter-in-law, Diane Wood, said, “They just wanted to apologize. They were very upset.”

Wood was wounded twice in the war and still has shrapnel in one leg. The first time, he was shot and hospitalized for a year. The extent of his injuries earned him a Purple Heart, but that didn't stop the Marine from serving another tour of duty overseas.

The writer’s kneejerk impulse to apologize for these punks comes through loud and clear. Makes me wonder what they left out of their report.

Calling the man’s stolen items “stuff” shows a disregard on behalf of the writer.

Kids with MartinLutherKingDay Assault Time on their hands.

We need to ban MLK Day. It’s causing too much law breaking.

Read the comments. Apparently one of the posters is the man’s daughter - says he’s been trying to hang on to his independence after his wife died last year, and this seriously impairs it. She also said the punks destroyed some ‘stuff’ that was very important to him.

I agree that the writer portrays these thugs as sympathetic characters. If you read the comments, the vet’s daughter in law is very angry about this and the death of his wife was very recent...in December.

Thet should be given the choice: compensate the gentleman for the damage they inflicted and either 1) enlist in the United States Marine Corps upon graduation from high school or 2) serve the recommended jail time for burglary.

A badly written story because a reader is left completely baffled about the perps’ motives. Did they just pick this house at random or is there history involved. Is this the first time they did this or is it a habit.

The writer got the who, what, where, when but forgot the why.

Perhaps it’s way past time to include the older folks who are supposed to be responsible for these in any jail sentence. A hefty fine, mandatory help in cleaning up the mess crated and some jail time for a while for any of them who have teens who commit crimes during the next 6 months or so at least might wake some people up.

You make a good point; I was just trying to think of a practical way for these punks to get a clue about how insignificant their short, miserable little lives are compared to that of this giant of a man whose house they burglarized.

Besides, once their squad mates discovered what they had done, their Marine Corps careers would draw to a brief, intensely painful, conclusion.

This is a pretty big story here in the Houston area. On the morning news they were reporting that people were volunteering their time to help him clean up and businesses were donating paint and painters to help him with repairs.
The tweets that they aired were pretty much in favor of the punks having to do the work themselves - under heavy supervision.

Perhaps it's the former “hooliganisn” I did in my past(Some vandalism, fighting etc.. nothing like this)I hope their repentance is true and this will be something they will look back at and feel ashamed.

I know the things I did I would not willing admit on a job application...With proper guidance and explanation of whom they have wronged, they will become proper citizens...

Else throw their asses in jail!!
