The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Nothing new here on the gardening front. I am enjoying the green green winter wheat. On a day like today-it looks like Spring.

Is this unusually cold weather for Phoenix?
Snowing and windy in northern Colorado.
I have forgotten the exact name of that granny’s thread. Do you remember it?
I went out in shirt sleeves for a bit at noon. It felt good, but the temps will be going lower fast later on today.
Mid 20’s during the day in N Idaho. We had 12’ of snow which melted away, but two more inches last night.
We have sheltered our rosemary and it is doing very well....rest of the garden will have to wait...
Great weekend to all....
It is a balmy 54 degrees today in the Florida of Iowa. Got some very much needed soaking rain yesterday. Checked the garlic/onions/shallots, none of them have heaved out, next week I might put a little straw/leaf mixture on the rows to prevent that as the weather looks to get a fair amount colder.
Just tried some of my batch of fermented vegetables, they were quite tasty. Put radishes, horseradish, potatoes, carrots, dried tomatoes, dill and coriander seed this go around, plus some ground pepper. Mmm, spicy!
Also bagged up some sprouts and starting another round tomorrow.
Starting the 1st of my plants the 20th of January. Can’t believe it’s already that time!
I shelter my perennial herbs etc. too. I really should have uncovered them for a bit today, but I didn’t catch that it would be so nice on the weather report, and didn’t get out and get it done.
I’ll try to do better next time.
We had a few days of precipitation this week too. What seeds will you start first?

They're calling this the coldest spell since the winter of '88, nearly a quarter century ago.
Still just counting the days until spring. The restlessness is getting to be unbearable.
I do have a job interview next week, if that goes well it will change my gardening plans. I was looking forward to camping out for months at a time, but maybe they’ll have a part-time position and I can get the best of both worlds?
Spotted something on the university’s auction website that I’ve been watching for for a while . . . only now money is so tight I’m trying to find a way to justify getting it. There’s a freeze-dryer being sold, starting bid is $20 and so far nobody’s bid on it!
I did get parts to build some book-sized spinning wheels. If the job doesn’t pan out the plan is to try and sell those. There are several specialty yarn and spinning shops in the area that might be interested.
We had some rainy days early this week, then three nice sunny days, but then comes rain until next Thursday.
We got some new grow lights and seed starting soil and are planning to get started Sunday afternoon or Monday. With a week or two of procrastination, that should work out just about right.
Wow, 1988, seems like a blink of the eye, and it’s already a quarter of a century almost. Time truly does fly.
