BCS title game a clash of cultures

I never had any problems in the short time I lived in the Deep South. My co-workers in Savannah, Ga., told me at times that I was nice for a Yankee, which is to say that thanks to Southern hospitality, I was very politely well-tolerated. Still, there were times I felt as if I needed a passport. I also had never seen an entire aisle at the grocery store dedicated to grits, the way they had it at the Piggly Wiggly. And while that life was a while ago, it was enough to give a sense of some of the bigger things at play Monday night in the Notre Dame-Alabama national championship game. This is a rivalry of the two greatest college football histories. But it’s also — especially to the people of the South, I suspect — between two symbols. This will be part football game, part culture conflict. It will be as if the line of scrimmage is the Mason-Dixon Line. Alabama football is a way of life. And it also is the seat of football in the South. It’s a cultural icon. Notre Dame is the nation’s team. Or, at least, the union’s. Those lines still mean something in the South. Strangely, there are still some hurt feelings about the Civil War, which, as I was politely informed while living there, is never to be called that, but instead the War Between the States, the War For Southern Independence or the War of Northern Aggression. Kirk McNair, who has written two books on Alabama football, including “What It Means To Be Crimson Tide,” is in Florida, where he’ll see his 34th consecutive Alabama bowl game.

The “sweet irony” of it all is that, the best well-known Catholic cable channel broadcasts from where else, ALABAMA.

Catholics vs Cousins? More like Catholics vs Baptists except that college kids participation in church isn't that high these days. The hype of media around these BIG games is always to find something to whip up emotion amoung the masses. Nothing like calling us Southern boys hicks to rile us up I guess. I expect Bama to beat Notre Dame back to the middle ages in a not so good game from a stats perspective. Then every one will hit South Beach and get royaly drunk in a city that is neutral ground, neither northern nor southern.

I lived a good part of my life as a ‘yankee’ in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama. I’ve never seen a grits aisle...even in Piggly Wiggly.

I’m Catholic, and I say, “Roll Tide!” I hope they win by 50.

This game ( Bama will win easily) is a mere warm up for the start of SEC play this Sept. Bama plays TAMU at Kyle Field.

Tide wants revenge...looking for payback against Johnny Football. If the Aggies win...they are in a good position for the national championship..

Aggies gonna BTHO Tide..

It will be interesting to see how A&M rebuilds their offensive line...they are losing some guys that are going to be tough to replace.

Go ‘Bama! I’m an Aggie who was skeptical of our move to the SEC. Well, I’m glad we did. We fit in with the other schools. We our proud of our Southern heritage.

I’m in Alabama and over 50 years old and have never seen a grocery isle dedicated to grits. So there goes his credibility

Oh, for God’s sake, just play the darn game already. This sort of meaningless pap, intended to fill column space, makes me wish both teams lose.

I live in Bama although am a transplant from Georgia. Have lived all over the country (but my home will always be Georgia in my heart)

I’m a Crimson Tide fan, a Georgia Bulldog fan, Georgia Tech fan and a Johnny Football fan. Love that guy.

If somebody’s all that worried about variety of grits, they’ll just go to the mill that ground them. Fine, medium, coarse, yellow, white, you name it, and ground fresh right there, from local farmers. We always bought Cherokee brand from the local mill when I was a kid. Getting harder to do now.

The two O-lineman haven't announced yet they're going to the NFL..they might decide to stay and go for a national championship..Aggies have EIGHT home games next season..weird.I get the sense they will BOTH go or stay..TAMU has a great recruiting class coming in..and supposedly some more surprises yet to be announced. HS kids are impressionable..Aggies are HOT, Longhorns NOT..Texas isn't getting the best recruits anymore..Mack Brown may be on his way out..

FYI..John Hoover is a sport columnist for the Tulsa World..a good writer..here's a GREAT quote from a recent column after the Cotton Bowl:

"Texas A&M last year left the Big 12 for the SEC, and took the state of Texas with it." Really sums it up rather nicely, dontcha think?

BTW our Gators have some awesome recruits coming in..supposedly the # 1 or #2 class in the whole country. Still can't figure out what happened in the Sugar Bowl..I worry about the coming season..not sure if we have a QB..Coach Boom has been really quiet since the loss...maybe he ran himself into a wall...

That is extremely amusing to anyone who has actually been to south bend. I think that is the first (and only) place I ever saw a sign depicting a car being towed with the caption “Solicit a prostitute, Lose your car.”

What a bunch of hooey! I loathe this type of ignorant yankee snob.

How about graduation rates for the football players.

According to the NCAA

Notre Dame football graduates 97% of it's players.

Alabama football graduates 72%.

Just something else here for folks to fight about. ;~))
