I don’t Shirley Maclaine.
Maggie Smith is pure gold.

I’m not fond of Shirley either. I wish she had stayed out of this excellent series.

Check out The Chronicles of Downton Abbey:A New Era on Amazon. You can read sections of it there. I was so fascinated I ordered a copy; exquisite photos. Amazing that everything is absolutely perfect, elegant and classy. Also learned that the episodes are not written that far ahead so none of the actors know what’s coming!

Maggie Smith is a jewel—she always has the perfect comback—her nuances are priceless. It’s unfortunate they had to drag Shrilly McLaine thru the landscape. As my father so often quoted “What you are speaks so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying”. The difference is that here the actors have become the characters while ours often just remain themselves and overshadow any role. Betty Davis (who???) was always Betty Davis and Meryl Streep is always herself. Which is why I don’t waste my time seeing her movies—I’ve seen her already.

I wish Netflix would get Season 2!!!

If you're an Amazon "Prime" member, Season 2 is available free on Amazon's Instant Streaming.

Agree.

Great actors and actresses become the character and make the audience believe they are the character.

Too may of the modern ‘actors’ and ‘actresses’ are, as you say, portraying themselves, with roles written for them. They are actually personalities, not ‘actors’ and ‘actresses.’

Check out the real story about the Lady who was the illegitmate child of a Rothschild and the Lord who helped discovered what the Muslim Brotherhood now wants to destroy in Egypt. The House in this show has quite a history

Andrew Lloyd Webber wants to buy the house and put his paintings in it since the current owners don't have the money to keep it up.

So... Matthew won’t take the money that will save them... but, I bet he DIES before he can get rid of it... and, MARY will keep it!

I saw on PBS a thing, the actual owners of Downton Abby. They have opened a shop, rent it out for weddings, etc to help pay upkeep. A lot of it is in shambles. They even use the owners furniture when shooting, interesting. And gorgeous.

I literally LOL'ed at some of her witty comments.

Very enjoyable Season 3 opener.

Soap opera, you must remember. Top of the line, but soap opera. And Fellowes is such a damn good writer. His writing and the skill of the actors makes it seem that one is watching real people, or at least real people as we reading a good novel might imagine them to be. And the way he plays with our emotions. He is always surprising me with his plot twists, such as the way he brings “Thomas” “into” the family. I read they are going int the 4th season, and in the twenties there are so many things that can happen.

Liked that. The Early is part curator and part estate-manager and gets to work on the property.
