Dr. Oz’s Miraculous Medical Advice (Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain)

As people were getting ready for the holiday season and its accompanying waist expansion late last year, Dr. Mehmet Oz let viewers of his TV show in on a timely little secret. “Everybody wants to know what’s the newest, fastest fat buster,” said the board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon and one of People magazine’s sexiest men alive. “How can I burn fat without spending every waking moment exercising and dieting?”

He then told his audience about a “breakthrough,” “magic,” “holy grail,” even “revolutionary” new fat buster. “I want you to write it down,” America’s doctor urged his audience with a serious and trustworthy stare. After carefully wrapping his lips around the exotic words “Garcinia cambogia,” he added, sternly: “It may be the simple solution you’ve been looking for to bust your body fat for good.”

In Dr. Oz’s New York City studio, garcinia extract—or hydroxycitric acid found in fruits like purple mangosteen—sounded fantastic, a promising new tool for the battle against flab. Outside the Oprah-ordained doctor’s sensational world of amazing new diets, there’s no real debate about whether garcinia works: The best evidence is unequivocally against it. Advertisement

The miracle cure isn’t really a miracle at all. It’s not even new. Garcinia cambogia has been studied as a weight-loss aid for more than 15 years. A 1998 randomized controlled trial looked at the effects of garcinia as a potential “antiobesity agent” in 135 people. The conclusion: The pills were no better than placebo for weight and fat loss.

More recently, a group of researchers summarized the evidence for this “breakthrough” extract in a systematic review of 12 randomized trials involving 706 participants. Some trials reported short-term slimming, but the overall effects were so small and most studies were so methodologically flawed that the authors were unable to conclude that garcinia extract has

Oz is/was a successful surgeon. Now he is a very, very successful entertainer. His audience is almost entirely women, presumably very easily impressed women.

In the words of Mark Levin, “What the hell is a Dr. Oz? I know what The Wizard of Oz is, but not a Dr. Oz.”

All this Oprah-sanctified guy has to do is pronounce something the new weight-loss or health cure-all, and the same women who swooned over Oprah will rush to grab it.

I can’t even stand the commercials for his show——filled with the same hysterical shrieking and screaming by the dupes who screamed for Oprah.

I asked my doctor what my BP was. He told me...and I said....take it again....He did and it was right on target....120/80.

Then he took my temperature...and it was 99.1. Told him I never run a temperature. He grabbed a different thermometer and took it again....and it was my usual 98.4. Digital stinks.

I still have my mercury thermometer.

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) from which these pills are made is not at all the same thing as mango (Mangifera indica).

I’ve seen this Dr. Oz a grand total of once on television. I’ve worked with herbals and nutraceutical companies in a marketing capacity, having done catalogs and website content for a few very recognizable ones.

I’ll say that there is some genuine benefit to many herbal nostrums, herbal anti-inflammatories and antimicrobials in particular. But, this basically unflashy benefit gets spun into some sort of panacea when it really isn’t, routinely.

I know showmanship when I see it, and I know quite well how to write sales copy in order to legally avoid FDA scrutiny. Structure/function. Always with the qualifiers. May. Helps with. That sort of thing. Sounds very persuasive if you’re wanting to be persuaded, and people with a particular nagging problem, persistent condition or even terminal diagnosis are really looking hard for something to latch onto. Women in particular.

Dr. Oz was going on about people claiming he’d endorsed certain products when in fact he doesn’t. The “as seen on Dr. Oz” rack danglers do not imply that he endorsed that particular marketer or manufacturer, but it does mean that he has advocated the use of that particular nostrum.

Use of a carefully cultivated, famous name for an implied if not actual endorsement is not free, I can also tell you that from the same professional exposure.

He’s in my opinion a salesman first and foremost. Draw your own conclusions.

Bingo. Now just add Dr Phil and the list will be complete .... entertainers. Once they get out to LA and see how easy it is to steal from supposed smart people they go all in. If Oz wasn’t making big bucks off these fools, he would be up in Oregon somewhere living in sustainable housing, have a sustainable garden, having 1.3 sustainable children, etc.

My BP goes up every time I’m in a doctor’s office. They constantly want to run tests for stuff they couldn’t cure if I had it, so I’m always wired up for an argument.

I had never watched the Show, but one day when switching channels I thought I would check it out for a moment.

The exciting topic came in an audience Q & A segment. Some guy wanted to know why you go #1 when you are going #2.

As I watched the convoluted Dr. Oz response, I realized we as a Nation will be going the way of the Dinosaurs very soon. In other news, my S-I-L records and watches Dr. Oz every day.
