SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A Sacramento man scanning the night sky caught a sudden burst of light through his telescope. He recorded that strange sight with his smart phone.
CBS13 shared the video with experts to see if they could solve the mystery.
This mysterious little tale begins earlier this week when Good Day Sacramento’s Cody Stark got this message on Facebook: “I have something on video no one has ever seen. I had my telescope out, caught an explosion in space. Wanna see the video?”
Cody’s response? Absolutely!
The video was shot with an iPhone through the eyepiece of a telescope, so CBS13 had to enlarge it to get a better look. It was shot on Dec. 20 around 5 p.m. in Sacramento by viewer Elijah Prychodzko.
“I saw something that I’d never seen before. I saw another object orbiting this — whatever it was up there, and I’ve never seen anything like that before,” said Prychodzko.

pretty good timing. he just had his cell phone in the eyepiece, the telescope pointed in just the righth direction to catch this. how did he know far enough in advance to get setup for the recording?

It was just light refraction or perhaps a seraph with gas.
right off the bat I saw a bunch of explosions. They were very brief.
Couldn't see the rest of the shower very well, but those initial collisions were head on and fantastic ~ lasting less than a second.

Looks like a satellite kill. And he just happened to be looking at the right place at the right time? Sure. Concur w/ the astrophysicist: This is not an astronomical event.
A distinct possibility. I saw my share of them explode in mid air by command detonation when I lived on base as a kid.
There has been a meteor shower going on the last few nights.

On January 25, 1878, The Denison Daily News noted that John Martin, a local farmer, had reported seeing a large, dark, circular object resembling a balloon flying “at wonderful speed.” Martin, according to the newspaper account, said it appeared to be about the size of a saucer, the first known use of the word “saucer” in association with a UFO.
Too bad he didn’t have an iPhone.

Some satellites release subsatellites, that could be killers following a grazing orbit. It’s impressive if they can orbit their targets before the kill.
It is an exploding weather balloon. The spot that seems to be orbiting is actually tethered below the balloon.

That explosion does not appear to take place in outer space but much closer up.

Ah, I was a few years ahead of you then. The family left Vandenberg when my dad retired in ‘63. I would have been about 16 years old. To this day I can remember the rumble and roar; the occasional explosion and the rare treat of wind blown debris falling back to ground.
Yep. I distinctly remember watching a missile launch from the front yard and it started heading inland soon after launch. I’m guessing it was at about 10,000 feet when it was command detonated. A remnant of one of the stages sliced through the roof of a trailer in Lompoc and came to rest over the top of a baby crib- no injuries, fortunately. Missile tests and failures were fairly common then.
