Hormel buying No. 2 peanut butter Skippy for $700 million

Hormel Foods apparently has a hankering for a peanut butter and bacon sandwich. The company primarily known for cured, smoked and deli meats said Thursday that it’s buying Skippy, the country’s No. 2 peanut butter brand, for about $700 million.

Skippy, which was introduced in 1932 and is a staple in American pantries, is intended to increase Hormel’s presence in the center of the supermarket where shelf-stable foods are sold. It also gives the Austin, Minn.-based company a clearer path for growth overseas; Skippy is sold in about 30 countries and is the leading peanut butter brand in China, where Hormel is also looking to expand its Spam line. …

Absolutely, there are several reipes if you want to “google”.

Here’s one:

First roast the nuts in a 350 degree oven on a baking sheet for 10 to 15 minutes; making sure they do not get too brown.

You will need a blender or food processor and some oil. Peanut oil, olive oil, coconut oil, or even a little butter if you like.

3 1/2 cups peanuts, roasted
1/2 tsp kosher salt(more or less to taste)
2tsp honey or maple syrup
3-4 Tbls oil (your preference)

Combine peanuts, salt, and honey in food processor fitted with a chopping blade. Process for 30 seconds, then while processor is running drizzle in oil and process 30 seconds. If peanut butter is too dry or thick, drizzle in the 4th Tablespoon. If you want it really easy to spread, and a little more honey and/or oil.

That’s all it takes.

I buy store brands too, or whatever I have a coupon for and/or is in sale. I'm not a peanut butter snob.

Years ago, the Krogers supermarket chain had a strong presence in this area. Their peanut butter came in all sizes of containers, including a pail which I think held 5 pounds of peanut butter. Almost every night before bedtime, Dad and I had a ritual. We would each get out our respective crackers (Dad liked saltines, I liked Ritz). Dad would set the pail of peanut butter in the middle of the kitchen table. We would each take our spreaders, dig into the peanut butter and spread it on our crackers.

Alas, Krogers left the area and my father passed on. I've never found peanut butter quite as good as Krogers and certainly not in five pound containers. But sometimes in memory of my dad, I get out the crackers and peanut butter. Never mind what Michelle and the food police say. Still one of my favorite snacks.

I’ve been buying Smucker’s Natural stuff.
List of ingredients is pretty short;
Peanuts.

Among the treats occasionally enjoyed at the Shibumi Residence is peanut butter and strawberry preserves - with bacon.

At the Roccus Ranchero I serve this on rye toast.

I like rye as well. My family prefers Italian.

But I agree with you. Good rye toast is just the thing for *almost* any sandwich.

I go with store brands on PB, unless something’s on sale that’s cheaper.

I don’t eat many PB sandwiches, but I do like PB & Ramen noodles. I put two packages of noodles in boiling water, use only one package of the Ramen chicken seasoning in a bowl, add red peppers, boiling water and whisk in a spoonful of peanut butter and toss this with the noodles when they come out. Makes a a Thai chicken-peanut taste.

When I do have it at home most of my PB consumption is probably straight out of the jar...

Thanks. Closest stores to me are about 25 miles away in Ohio and WV.

The reason Krogers left here was the union. Basically, the union demanded too much money, the company said no, the workers went on strike, the company packed up and left.

Actually when it comes to Peanut Butter I like store brands best

A lot of them are made by a company called Red Wing Foods in upstate NY. Excellent stuff.

Mmmmm! I’ve been eating peanut butter and bacon sandwiches since I was a kid (late 50s) and still enjoy them from time to time. Which peanut butter? The one you like the best is obviously the best one. JIF always tended to be a little too dry but that’s my preference. I haven’t tried fried spam on my PB sandwich but as much as I like fried spam it might be worth trying.
