'Django' an unsettling experience for many blacks

Tracey White's initial impression of "Django Unchained," Quentin Tarantino's new slave-era shoot-'em-up extravaganza, could be summed up in three words: smart, funny and ugly. Sitting through a recent screening in Beverly Hills, the L.A. costume designer was mostly absorbed and found herself laughing aloud at particularly outrageous moments.

But White, who is black, said her feelings evolved significantly. Two days after reflecting on the matter of slavery and Tarantino's treatment, she pronounced the movie mostly ugly.

"He [Tarantino] gets a good product out of it in terms of wit and a visual look," said White. "But when it was over I found myself wondering, 'What is he trying to do?' I enjoyed the movie when I was in there, but I still have a problem with Tarantino when he deals with our race."

White will certainly not be alone among African Americans in her ambivalence about the gleefully outrageous film. While "Django" has nabbed almost uniformly warm reviews and four NAACP Image Award nominations (including for best picture), the fact is that it is an extremely Hollywood-ized vision of a critical black American experience.

This movie goes way beyond "Mississippi Burning" and that movie caused a lot of whites to get beaten.

The MSM take of course is that only blacks suffer violence at the hands of whites..

so I got DoJ figures for the years 2000 - 2008. I expected that by now there would be figures through 2010. If there are figures for years after the Department of Justice was replaced by the Obama/Holder Department of Just Us and Our People they are not in this series (see at bottom) that I used.

I have a habit of engaging black people in debate, usually once I get to know them, about racial issues, primarily because they tend to be so indoctrinated with the "everything is whitey's fault" attitude, and when I hear that attitude expressed, it's go time. So one day I was chatting with a black lady that I used to work with, and she expressed the opinion that most white people were racist, or had the potential to be racist. When I asked her what her justification for that was, she couldn't really answer.

So I straight out asked her this: "Has any white person ever called you a nigger?" She had to admit that nobody ever had. To which I answered, "Well, not only have I been called "white boy" a number of times [which is the black man's equivalent of calling a white man a "nigger"] but I've had the distinct pleasure of being in the middle of a large group of black men who were threatening to beat my ass for being white."

So who are the real victims of racism these days? The ones who have to read about the days when their ancestors were treated badly because of race, or the ones who are treated badly NOW because of race? I want reparations!

None of this changed her mind, or course. Brainwashing runs deep.

I've never felt in danger but I have had a couple of discussions similar to what you describe. Plus..

in the 1960s I had rented another apartment across town and planned to move out within 30 days. Meanwhile a very nice young black couple had moved into my current apartment building. When they saw me moving they assured me that I did not have to move on account of them; I assured them that that was not the reason.

Only ten years ago I took the light rail to downtown, it was almost empty. A nice middle-aged black woman boarded and sat down across the isle. As is my wont when approaching my exit (the next stop) I got up and stood at the door. The women exclaimed "You don't have to move on account of me!" I explained that the next stop was my destination.

These two examples were of typical middle class folk.. but 24/7 on TV and in movies; in some homes; in some churches; in universities, public schools; and in all local, state and federal offices it's "blacks are victims and whites are racists."

BTW I will post the interacial sexual assault DoJ figures below. Interesting numbers.

I found some interesting and germane information on wiki graffiti that has since be removed because it contained the following:

In the 111,590 cases in which the victim of rape or sexual assault was white, 44.5 percent of the offenders were white, and 33.6 percent of the offenders were black. In the 36,620 cases in which the victim of rape or sexual assault was black, 100 percent of the offenders were black, and 0.0 percent of the offenders were white.

Fortunately the source of the information is still there.. until the Obama/Holder Dept. of Just Us realize that it's open to the public.

I have since prepared a table for years 2000 through the latest available year 2008. I have not downloaded the pdf files so if the Obama/Holder Dept. of Just Us & Our People removed the files. I have no backup.

The only Tarantino movie I appreciated was From Dusk Til Dawn, even with dips**t Clooney in it. Thought Pulp Fiction was way over-rated and thought Jackie Brown could have used a hatchet to help edit it. Kill Bill 2 wasn't horrible (Uma - Eggs!). Have no desire, however, to see Django - and that was before Foxx spouted his ignorance.

I’ve only seen “From Dusk...” twice. It’s too gory. PF is fine, but I don’t lionize it as some do. Wasn’t all that big on the Kill Bills, only having seen them just once. I may only see Django on a movie channel in the future, but my opinion of Jamie Foxx now is nearly that of Sean Penn or Harry Belafonte.

Yes, and while I haven’t seen this movie yet, I’ve gotten the impression that he is trying to basically repeat what he did with IB, but replace Jews with Blacks, and Nazis with slave owners. I think he believes that, by framing what is basically a violent pulp revenge story in these type of scenarios, he is adding some “relevance” to his films.

Really, he’s not doing himself a service. His movies can be enjoyable, but he is not going to really “clean up his act”, and start making straight, meaningful dramas like a Spielberg. The audience that wants a story with some political commentary and subtext isn’t usually the same that wants a mindless, profane, violent escapist fantasy. So, by trying to mix these genres up, I think he just ends up disappointing everyone.

Blacks should be angry. The movie trivializes their history. Now, they know how many of us feel, too, when Hollywood caricatures us. But I doubt if that will cross the minds of many people. I mean this year we’ve had Lincoln as he never was in film, and it happens all of the time that the media and Hollywood change the story to fit their worldview even when the truth is just as fascinating, often more so.
