Man pushed to his death under train in Queens

It happens in Toronto occasionally, IIRC the last such incident was about 20 years ago. Same scenario- a mentally disturbed individual shoved a woman without warning. Fortunately there was no train and she got away OK.

on a serious note, is this because of the release of many mental asylum people in the 80s?

in Hong Kong and Japan, due to the number of suicides, they have glass walls that separate the platform from the tracks until the train comes in -- the doors in the glass walls exactly match the doors of the train and these open simultaneously.

I think in the 80s there was a general release of mental asylum folks and now most are just sent home with meds unless they are "violent" -- and that seems to be unless they kill..

If it’s rush hour and you stand against the wall, you’ll never get on the train...

I don't live or work in NYC so few of my subway trips are during rush hour.But I would think that standing away and then approaching...cautiously...as the train is slowing to a stop would be a plan.

My basic attitude toward NYC was nicely summed up by Lilly Tomlin on Saturday Night Live..."New York is always knowing where your purse is".

During rush hour on some lines, a line of people is basically formed right where the doors stop. Just along the edge of the platform on either side of the door. Usually the train is full and the last few people in “line” don’t get on. I’m talking “full full”, where people’s faces are inches from armpits.

You’re never getting if you stand against the wall unless you cut the “line” when the train comes and risk being attacked by some crazy. Plenty of homeless crazies on the subways with nothing to lose.

I’m thankful every day that I don’t have to take them anymore. Rush hour down there is a zoo.

I have ridden the NYC subway a few times years ago and I wondered why there wasn’t some kind of railing or a 4 foot wall along the side of the platform and a gate across the opening where you enter the train. The platform edge is a scary place.

While these stories are horrible, they reinforce my believe that NYC is a dirty sh!thole that should be avoided at all costs. I’m 10 miles west of NYC, and haven’t been there in a over a decade; I spend too much money trying to get away from the denizens of that toilet.

Absolutely; I rode buses for years in college, and it was great motivation to study hard and get a decent job. You don’t even need to look at hi-tech gadgets or PCs to see the divide in this country; some people are just completely incapable of passing a driving test, maitaining insurance/registration on a vehicle, etc., and their personal flaws that put such things beyond their reach are probably the same reason they fail at other things.
