There are close to 100 recognized domestic cat breeds and every last one of them descended from wildcats. Some are recognizable just by looking at them. For instance, we’ve all heard of Persian, Siamese and Burmese cats. Other cats, however, aren't as recognizable, and not nearly as common. Here are some adorable photos of rare cat breeds who may not have crossed your path!

Timmy has been neutered for years, but he does not understand the concept of “no balls.” Neither does he understand what that means when his would be lover, Licorice, is “spayed.” She does not comprehend the concept of “tomcat.” So the antics between them are forever, well, “interesting.” And forever frustrating to Timmy, and forever annoying to Licorice.

My brother has three savannah cats, which are descended from servals, an African wild cat species. They resemble small cheetahs and are very playful.

BINKS: (Walking around the Starbug) Binks to Enlightenment. Have arrived on the derelict. Confirm initial speculation: there is absolutely nothing of any value or intrigue here. It's one of the old class-2 ship-to-surface vessels -- the very model, in fact, that was withdrawn due to major flight design flaws.

Crew: 3. (Passes along the crew members, who are now standing in line) One series-4000 mechanoid -- almost burnt out. Give it maybe three years. Nothing of salvageable value.

Ah, Felis Sapiens -- bred from the domestic house cat and about half as smart. No value in future study of this species.

My manx runs like a rabbit. Guess it's because of not having a tail. If I'm on the computer, she's has to lay on my hands. Between a keyboard that doesn't work and her, my posts read like I'm drunk or worse.

I’ve heard about those. If I ever become unexpectedly wealthy a Savannah Cat is on my “buy it” list.

I think if I owned a cat with a face like that, I'd probably burst out laughing every time I saw him. Very entertaining, bad for getting stuff done.

See... I knew there was a story! Poor Ugs. I think he is unusual and much more than an “embryonic hybrid”. If I had found him in the woods.. well, let’s just say I would have an unusual kitty! Thanks, Joe. Merry Christmas!!

I can’t pick a favorite out of the slideshow; they’re all gorgeous.

Merry Christmas to everyone, and to your feline owners, as well!

Indeed. But he’s making a good effort to sorta kinda jolly up the scene.

Those two cats remind me of Lucas Prince of Darkness and Miss Hissy Slashy. They’re always hissing at each other, but they never come to blows.

Congrats on the new cat! I don't know how you could have lived so long without one.

Here is my Maine Coon Bijou playing with one of her many toys.
