Homeowner: UPS employee caught red-handed stealing Christmas gift

HOUSTON -- Sitting in front of his computer, Al Alverson said he couldn't believe what he saw when went back to look at surveillance video recorded from a camera he had installed above his front door three years ago.

Wednesday, he and his wife Sandra Alverson were expecting two Christmas gifts that they had purchased online to be delivered, but when they got home, one of them -- delivered by Federal Express -- wasn't there. They thought it was strange because the delivery company emailed them a notification confirming the package had been dropped off earlier that morning.

"It said it was delivered at 9:29 a.m.,” Al Alverson said. “So I go up and I have a DVR with all the cameras on it to take a look."

And sure enough at 9:29 a.m. he clearly saw his iPad Mini being delivered. He continued to search the video and at 1:15 p.m. he saw the family's second holiday gift delivered by UPS, but two minutes later, the UPS employee returns.

"I said, ‘oh my god,’ it is the UPS guy," Alverson said.

And he was right. Dressed in the familiar brown uniform, the video showed the driver returning and taking the FedEx package sitting by the front door with the iPad Mini inside.

What did UPS do about it? Has the UPS driver been arrested?

The theft is particularly stupid considering that UPS drivers can make over 100 grand in salary and benefits yearly. So this dope got himself fired for stealing something he could easily afford with little more than one days pay.

I’ll bet this wasn’t the first time this driver had helped himself to something after checking that no one was home.

UPS replaced the iPad and fired the driver who was then arrested and charged with theft.

I think the local police need to be talking to that Fed EX driver too. Just how did the UPS driver know that particular package contained an IPad?
Think about it. The FedEx driver had access to tracking numbers so he can check the package status on his phone and discover what the package contains. He notifies his buddy who happens to be a UPS driver in the same vacinity. The UPS guy picks up the package (why wouldn’t your average thief take both packages?), they sell the IPad and split the profit.
Since only the UPS guy was fired, the FedEx driver needs only to find another partner.

A few days ago there was an article about an 8 (?) year old girl who was stealing the neighbors’ packages. She also was caught with a surveillance camera.

The box was most likely unmarked, but as a delivery driver I’m sure he learned, directly or indirectly, what was likely to be in that box, especially given that where it came from was likely on the box as well.

I don’t think that he was working in conjunction with the FedEx guy as that would be far too complicated - they’d have to know they were delivering to the same house on the same day, and these are things they don’t really know until the morning. That’s a lot of coordination for very little return.

Now, what I do think is that a) he knew what was in the box from experience and b) he’s stolen a hell of a lot more than just one of them.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yea but they only did this after the homeowner posted the video of the driver stealing on youtube. At first UPS did not wanna talk to him but after thousands of hits on his youtube site UPS finally did something.

UPS in rank in my opinion.

Yea one almost had to have a camera by the house these days.

Did you notice the homes the 8 year old girl was stealing from? That was not the ghetto or projects. Looked like expensive homes.

Any more people have sticky fingers.

I once ordered a box of cigars that was delivered by UPS, the driver ran up threw the box on the porch, yelled UPS and ran to his truck and drove away as fast as he could. When I picked up the box it was obviously torn open and empty! I called UPS to complain and the little dweeb started berating me for accusing one of their people of theft. It was only after I pointed out that I could see the same information on my computer as he and that it clearly showed where and when the theft probably occurred in their facility that he finally agreed to replace my product. He never did answer as to why they would deliver a obviously empty box.
