I live in zone 4b and they need every day to ripen - most don’t by the end of September. I start the seeds indoors in flats and transplant. Moral: they need a long growing season.

FWIW, this is one failing of Baker Creek. They do not provide adequate information on all their offerings. One variety gives days to maturity, another doesn’t. Same for descriptions. He’s young, though, and I think he’ll get better. He certainly is crazy about getting seeds into the country, too, and that’s a good thing.

Thanks ,good to know it transplants ok. If you can get it to fruit that way in zone 4b I shouldn't have problems getting it to ripen at all as I am in zone 9b (It's 80F today our "winter" is just a few days per year if a winter storm rolls down the east coast in mid January)

I'll take the lack of info on the packets for the choice of getting some really odd balls stuff I can't find any where else . I can see it being a pain for most folks though to lack that info but I am used to not being able to rely on the info on any packets (they are always wrong for my area lol as we have a really weird growing season )

I still have the deep fryer my mother used in the '50s I am getting worried about the cord also. I also use a fan my father bought in the '50s that was manufctured in Japan by Mitsubishi Electric, it works so well I will be sad the day I finally fails. It actually blows volumes of air through a wide open blade guard that a small child could stick their whole hand through. It never hurt me as a kid because I never put my hand in it! LOL

A picture of a fan that looks like ours. But ours is in much better shape.

I doubt we were smarter than the kids now days so what's the difference today? Maybe it's the gimme attitude of parents now. They don't accept their kids do stupid stuff so manufacturers have to go to extremes so they don't get sued. Back in the day, if you did stick your hand in the fan, your father would have bopped you on the head and gave you what for for being an idiot (and your friends would want to see the severed fingers!) but you'd learn real fast to never do it again and life would go on.

How does one propogate English ivy? Just stick a piece in the ground? I plated 2, one died, the other is going like gangbusters. I’ll be mixing them with clementis they are going over an arch. One of the iveys is up the arch, reaching for the otherside. The second one is nowhere to be found.

Now that’s not something I know anything about. Still I’ probably cut off about 5”, pull off all but about 3 leaves on the lower part. Dip it in rooting powder or solution, and stick it in moist dirt in a pot. Cover the pot with a clear plastic bottle to make a little hot house and see what happens.

Generic replacement power cords for older tabletop appliances can be had if you look around. here is one:

http://www.amazon.com/PR100-standard-control-frypans-griddles/dp/B00068KZ10

I also remember my appliance repair and parts store had some generic cords for older fryers and griddles, but that was in Mobile and was four years ago.

I like your fan. I have a couple of old table model fans also.

We have unseasonably warm days here in western PA even tho it drops to 28 degrees at night and the ground is frosted at dawn. My kohl plants look remarkably healthy.

My father took good care of everything he ever bought. I have the original paper manuals for just about everything he left behind. My wife can’t believe it! I think he was very careful of where and how he spent his money. His cars and trucks lasted forever. I have all his tools - old Sears Craftsman stuff and good quality. He would not throw anything out that could be repaired by him or a local repair guy.

Thank you greeneyes. I’ll do just that. Gardening is great! I spent some time clearing the acorns in my front raised garden. Man O Man, the drought really put some reproduction in some of the oak trees. I’m going to start some Live Oak trees from these acorns and see if I’m successful. When they get some size, I’ll plant them along the edge of the property and twine their branches while they’re young and bendable. Then I’ll do the same along the driveway and remove the legustrum.

Gardening is great, I agree. Another great thing is cooking and eating the produce. Tonight I picked some stuff from the winter garden and I had a little green onions and carrots to add to some wild and brown rice I had cooked from my pantry stash.

Also a salad made from my lettuce, onions, carrots and tomatoes. All to go with some baked fish.

Now if I could just figure out how to raise some fish in a tank here in the cold of winter....LOL.
