China Fears End of the World is Nigh
The Telegraph ^ | 07 Dec 2012

China is taking the date of December 21 - the day the world is due to end - seriously, with panic buying of candles sweeping through counties. Malcolm Moore reports.

China's most famous book of prophecies, the 7th century Tui Bei Tu, makes no direct mention of the end of the world.

But in Sichuan province, panic buying of candles has swept through two counties in the fear that an ancient Mayan prediction that the world will end on December 21 proves to be true.

"Candles are selling by the hundreds, with buyers constantly coming to the market. Many stores have run out," said Huang Zhaoli, a shopper at the Neijing Wholesale Market, to the West China City Daily newspaper. Mr Li, the owner of the Guangfa grocery store in Chengdu, added: "Lots of people have been buying candles recently. At first, we had no idea why. But then we heard someone muttering about the continuous darkness".

The source of the panic was traced to a post on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter, predicting that there will be three days of darkness when the apocalypse arrives.

One of my students, an 8 Year old girl, asked me if I thought the Zombie Apocalypse was going to happen on 12/21/12.

I said that if The God Of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob was going to tell ANYONE the date, it would have been Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob.

Not some pagan Mayan stone carver! LOL!

You got that right.

However if those that are frightened wish, I will make myself available to accept their worldly goods.

Lets all pray that the end of the world will not end. I’m sure the religious leaders of the world on 12/22 will say that prayer saved us.

We have a lot of family coming to visit us this Christmas. I was wondering if we should have a last big dinner party on December 20, just in case.

But I see that’s a Thursday. No one will be here before the evening of Friday, the 21st.

Oh, well.

Actually, the Little Girl was quite content with my answer, and no longer fears the date. Probably because she just got a NEW SG Special for Chanukah!

One of the festivals on the Chinese calender is the Winter Solstice. On that day family gathers together and have a dinner because it’s the last big festival that is celebrated until Chinese New Year (there are other festivals between the two dates but most of them are regional rather than national). I wonder how many families are going to cancel the dinner just in case.

I’m in Hong Kong and my in-laws plan on getting together. However, the one thing I’ve always wondered is that if the world ends on 12/21 does that mean that this side of the world ends several hours before the Mayan side of the world?

The end of the world is always at least 1007 years away and holding.

The clock starts ticking down when a 7 year peace treaty is signed with Israel and a temple is built in Jerusalem.

Those two events will begin a series of significant population reductions worldwide. At that point, candles, food and ammo will be as helpful as an umbrella in an F4 tornado.

Okay - so at least the US will have advanced warning since the time zone starts in New Zealand. They get the 21st. of December first. We can all watch it on TV as the 21st. moves closer. Or does it happen with one big bang where North America and South America go on the 20th?
