PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A deadly crash has been reported along Interstate 64 at the Hurricane rest stop.
The wreck was reported just after 11 a.m. Thursday.
Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards tells WSAZ.com Hurricane Police got into a pursuit with a driver that was allegedly wanted for taking items from a local store. The chase reached 100 MPH in the eastbound lanes before the driver tried to exit the interstate and crashed into a semi parked at the Hurricane rest stop, according to Mayor Edwards.
Mayor Edwards says the man was killed in the crash. Emergency crews are on the scene now using the jaws of life to get the man out of the car.
Investigators say this man was a fugitive wanted on unrelated bank robbery charges.
The driver of the semi that was hit tells WSAZ.com he was at the rest stop to take a short break. He had just returned from the restroom and was ready to turn the ignition on when the car slammed into his rig, according to the driver.
No one else was hurt in the accident.

Oddly enough, I have never heard a nickname applied to Hurricane. However this town is just down the road from Poca, WV whose high school sports teams are nicknamed the Dots.
He wasn’t running because of the items he stole from the shop, he was a wanted fugitive over bank robberies. This only happened because we arrest bank robbers, the problem will go away when we make bank robbery legal.

Yes, its sad. I also feel bad for the truck drivers who is mixed up in it through no fault of his own.
There’s only one fatal crash I’m interested in.
Actually Hurricane is not too far from Tornado, WV.
Ideally, they’d drop the late senator’s name from the Interstate.
But keep it on the toll booths.
Poca Dots. That’s cute. Like the UConn Huskies.
I’m surprised he didn’t get votes
That won't work if the suspect is driving a stolen vehicle.
DUI.
Thank you for the alert Morgana. I’m sorry for being so late to respond. I had not heard this because I’ve been tied up since Wed. with cataract surgery that took me to Columbus Thurs and Friday and recovery is still taking place. Going to work today but would rather stay home. Oh well. It’s too bad that people try to run from police. They should know by now they can’t get away.
