PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A deadly crash has been reported along Interstate 64 at the Hurricane rest stop.

The wreck was reported just after 11 a.m. Thursday.

Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards tells WSAZ.com Hurricane Police got into a pursuit with a driver that was allegedly wanted for taking items from a local store. The chase reached 100 MPH in the eastbound lanes before the driver tried to exit the interstate and crashed into a semi parked at the Hurricane rest stop, according to Mayor Edwards.

Mayor Edwards says the man was killed in the crash. Emergency crews are on the scene now using the jaws of life to get the man out of the car.

Investigators say this man was a fugitive wanted on unrelated bank robbery charges.

The driver of the semi that was hit tells WSAZ.com he was at the rest stop to take a short break. He had just returned from the restroom and was ready to turn the ignition on when the car slammed into his rig, according to the driver.

No one else was hurt in the accident.

He lost his life this morning running from police over items shoplifted. I doubt what he stole was really anything that important.

They were important enough for him to risk his life. He shouldn't have stolen them. Also

Investigators say this man was a fugitive wanted on unrelated bank robbery charges

Career criminal. No loss at all to society.

Whatever he stole, he thought they were worth his life.

I first heard this story on the radio an hour ago. At the time it was not reported he was a career criminal. Only heard he was driving up to 100 mph to get away from police. Now I know it was for more than stealing something stupid.

I still think it is sad.

I dunno ... I'm not a cop,

But if I was in pursuit of a shoplifter, (I THINK they probably knew the crime), and the speed was approaching or maintaining 100 mph ... somewhere in my head I'd be thinking, "someone's gonn'a die for a friggin' pair of Nike's ... and it ain't gonn'a be me"

.. and I THINK, I'd probably slowly lose the guy in traffic.

Sorry chief ... he was crazy good and got away.

That's what I think ... but I'm not a cop

Hurricane, W. Va.—its nickname is probably the Windy City.

I agree with you!! At that speed he could have run into someone else besides a parked semi.

The police have dashboard cameras. Those cameras can record a license plate. Run the number and hunt him down at home.

This was crazy.

I still think it is sad.

What is sad are all the injuries - physical and financial - people like him inflict on others during their lives. I can't mourn the loss of a career criminal. I have sympathy for the victims, not the criminal.

He wasn’t running b/c of what he shoplifted this morning but for other crimes, or a whole accounting of those crimes. And the police weren’t just chasing him for shoplifting this morning but the whole accounting of the crimes he has and/or is suspected of committing.

Why bother with the jaws of life. Haul the wreck to the local landfill and bury the mess.

Actually I’m worried about the people he could have killed in the process of this high speed chase. I do travel I-64 sometimes.

In these cases, a license plate isn’t going to be adequate to charge someone.

Hurricane, W. Va.—its nickname is probably the Windy City.

The town itself is pronounced "Hurri-cun".

It's not the 100 mph speed that'll get ya, it's that sudden stop at the end.....

I drive through there on my way up to Columbus, OH once or twice a year.
Usually drive as fast as I can between Charleston and US 35 exit.
There’s the sister chemical plant to the one in Bhopal, India along that stretch. The plant that spilled some chemical and killed hundreds,
Hurricane, St. Albans, Nitro, don’t know the exact location.
Keep the windows up and the AC on recirculate. (not that it would help in a real chem cloud.)
Spooks me.
