I should’ve known I wouldn’t be first. He is such an ass, but then again, his network sucks too.

To be accurate, he was quoting from an op piece by Jason Witlock, a writter for KC paper but it still is blaming the gun instead of the person who had the gun.

Very sad that his girlfriend got killed and he thought it was his only way out.

I had to change the station. As much as I enjoy watching football - I do not appreciate the poliical commentary.

At the time I wasn’t paying much attention, because it was Costas, so I didn’t catch the name of the dude he was quoting. My jaw dropped once I started hearing what he said. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but I was.

Like a pencil is to blame for misspelled words.

Did this suicide/murderer guy throw a football? Or did the football throw itself?

(I don’t keep up with sports that involve a ball. I like sports that involve guns or bull riding.)

Here’s the whole quote:

“Well you knew it was coming. In the aftermath of the nearly unfathomable events in Kansas City, that most mindless of sports clichés was heard yet again: “Something like this really puts it all in perspective.”

Well, if so, that sort of perspective has a very short shelf life. Since we will inevitably learn about the perspective we have supposedly again regained the next time ugly reality intrudes upon our games.

Please. Those that need tragedies to continually recalibrate their sense of proportions about sports would seem to have little hope of ever truly achieving perspective. You want some actual perspective on this? Well, a bit of it comes from the Kansas City based writer Jason Whitlock, with whom I do not always agree, but who today said it so well, that we may as well just quote, or paraphrase, from the end of his article:

“Our current gun culture,” Whitlock wrote, “ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead… Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.”

In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connections to football will be analyzed. “Who knows? But here,” wrote Jason Whitlock, “is what I believe: if Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.”

The second half is next.”

- Bob Costas, 12/2/12 halftime commentary Cowboys/Eagles game, Sunday Night Football, NBC.

Only way out of what? The guy had a good thing going - started 11 games for KC, after going undrafted 4 years earlier. Just had a daughter and his mother was helping them out with the baby. It amazes me that people blame the guns for the killing and suicide. Something was wrong with Belcher - and he could have killed his GF with just about anything and killed himself that way also.

NBC has really disappointed me over the past couple of years, with their programming and agenda. But again, when I think about it....I remember they are owned by Comcast and GE - which says it all.

Bob, why not blame the NFL for concessions? Before you run your little mouth

Yeah, like an NFL Linebacker couldn’t have killed a woman with his bare hands and then cut his wrists or throat with a knife.

How NBC allowed this idiotic rant on air is ridiculous.

Costas must be hanging around Olbermann.

Bob, why not discuss how many former NFL player have killed themselves not in the head to prove playing in the NFL is deadly.

Turned off the game and never turned it back on. Too bad, because it was a pretty good game at that point. But I didn’t turn the game on to listen to a political rant.

You could give Costas the truth about firearms deterring, preventing, and reducing deaths, but it would be lost on the moron. Sports talking heads commenting on anything outside of sports are buffoons.

I was referring to the suicide.

He had a lot going for him but no one will know what made him snap.

hubby and I watched a little of that and about spewed. He quickly turned it, then exclaimed WTF was THAT?

A guy near me killed his neighbor with a bat over the weekend. I’m sure there are a number of bat-related deaths every year. Why not outlaw those?

Automobiles, ditto.

I’m sure that gun “went off” all by itself. Both times.

How does he KNOW they would both be alive today?

If he was angry enough and the gun wasn’t available, there was also the choice of
• stabbing (outlaw posession of any pointy or sharp objects)
• strangling/choking (outlaw all ropes, neckties, string, fishing line, chains, necklaces, etc)
• bludgeoning (outlaw any bats, sticks, rods, garden tools, hockey sticks, hammers, mallets, etc)
• hacking (outlaw axes, machetes, slingblades, etc).
• beating with fists (pass laws ensuring that everyone keeps their hands to themselves at all times)
• drowning (outlaw bathtubs and swimming pools)
• poisioning... (make it illegal for anyone to possess any chemical that cannot be safely ingested)

WE MUST KEEP THE COUNTRY SAFE!!!!!

“Our Current Gun Culture”?!?!?!?! What in the He!! is this moron talking about? The current “Gun Culture” I am aware of is decent law-abiding citizens owning and using guns for LEGAL activities. Not menacing or intimidating unsuspecting people. This idea that “ghetto culture” has permeated all corners of American society is outrageous. Please Jason and Bob Doofus, get over yourselves. The problem is the NFL; this type of thuggery has been celebrated in this league for years now. Instead of getting rid of the hoodlums, thugs, and criminals the league continues to apologize for these lunatics. Clean up your own house before you start going around trying to blame Americans for being part of some “imaginary Culture”.

Football is one of the last male bastions, so of course the liberals have to do what they can to spoil it.
