Free Republic | Nov, 23, 2012 | greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Neighbor did, since he's the whiz-bang old guy that can do it.

They died when planted on this property. It grows other stuff great. I get peppers, tobacco, tomatoes, okra, etc.. without a problem.

WoW... Is this a across the fence neighbor or a down the street neighbor that the soils are different?

Back fence neighbor, west of me. Less than 50 meters away, from plant to plant.

Same soil, only my sand is a little deeper, when you get to that layer.

I've been here for over 50 years on the same property, off and on.

I don't get it, unless it's for the sins of my youth.

Have you tried taking some cuttings from his plant and getting some started that way?

I've had good luck starting rosemary from cuttings.

I take a cleanly cut stem, strip off the leaves as deeply as I intend to plant, and then treat that end with rooting hormone.

The treated stem is planted in moist sterile medium, and that pot is covered in plastic (don't all the leaves to touch the plastic)to keep the moisture even. Keep in bright light BUT NOT direct sunlight. Check for roots after 3-4 weeks; if the roots have started growing, remove the plastic. After there is vigorous root growth, replant in soil.

I took advantage of the weather and planted another 250 Sq Ft of cover crop after Church today. I use this 50 year old Wheel Hoe with the weeding knives to stir the soil before and after planting the seed of Oats, Common Vetch and Austrian Field Peas
