I have had a pair of Cobras for years.
My wife and I have used them whenever we are on the road in two separate vehicles. They are much easier to use than a cell phone. Just press the transmit button and talk - no dialing a number. Very handy tools when traveling.

Thanks for setting me straight. I am fortunate to have connected with the Offical Prepper Spokeperson so quickly.

I will save a lot of posting bandwidth for Free Republic in the future by simply running things past you first.

Can the BaoFeng UV-5R run on external power like from a cigarette lighter using 12 volts? BTW, I have an HTX-202 Two meter handheld from Radio Shack.

Chip on MY shoulder? I simply passed on a small amount of info from the FCC website. I did not say anything but "by the way, the license DB is search-able, FYI".

You respond by attacking me and portending to speak for preppers everywhere. To what end? How have I done anything to you by pointing out what I did? Why respond to my comment if you didn't care about the issue? Why attempt to shut down another voice here?

I thought the Prepper ping list was a group to share information, not a chest-beating bravado session. Maybe I am on the wrong list. Where is the one where we respect others and share useful information?

I simply passed on information that some don't give a rat's pointy little tail about what lists we are on, and don't care to hide like cowards.

I have never pretended to speak for anyone besides myself.

You are certainly doing what you can to divert the thread, though.

I do agree with your philosophy on heavy real world testing when practical.

I also carry a GMRS on the mountain trips (PNW), and a spare alkaline battery pack for the Wouxun besides the li pack it comes with, and many spare loose batteries that fit the two GPSs and GMRS also.

You said:

Perhaps you have a false concept about an 'interest group'.

...followed by:

I have never pretended to speak for anyone besides myself.

You statement is accurate only if you eat enough to be an 'interst group'. I didn't divert the thread, the FCC website information is certainly more germane than your ramblings over your philosopy of what defines courage and patriotism.

After my accident, I added a whistle to my mountain list. I couldn't talk above a whisper, but I was breathing, and I could have used a whistle to get the guys to where I was.

Radio and a flashlight got them close. Problem was I had dropped off a little shelf and wasn't visible.

Keep carrying a radio. It's a Good Thing(tm).

What is an armature radio?

I just want to know if I can text with a walkie talkie.

Also, drivie talkie is illegal. It is only a matter of time before they outlaw walkie talkie.

I have no code tech amateur radio license for 20 years, my last radio a fully mod Kenwood TH-78a that could listen to ATC and 900Mhz mobile phones. I’d like to try dual-bands handie-talkie with 6 meters if permissible in my license.

Last I heard, 6 meters is ok for no-code techs. 10 meters is off-limits because of ITU agreements.

Your milage may vary. Check your FCC bandplan before keying.

I have a busted Drake DX-4 and TX-4 in another room. The condensers gave up all at once when I applied power after a few years deployed.

I'm still torn between selling them as parts radios, or putting the effort into rebuilding them.

The problem knocked out the main transformer... that's a sticking point.

Sweet radios. I spent a lot of time on them, CW and SSB. Nice part was that you could put a glass coffee pot over the finals and keep it warm all night long.

R4-B. Correct. I have DX on the brain. It's suppose to be a sweet spot for DX. Stupid sunspots.

Transmitter is TR-4B. External power supply with a speaker in the matching box. Box plug/pin connector to the transmitter, 120 mains to the receiver.

It's been a while since I looked at them.

I just looked at them to confirm with a flashlight... and cried a little inside that they are dead.

I even have a box full of spare tubes for them.

Get an amateur radio operators license. Then you can transmit with some POWER!! :-)

Yep! I just love keying up my Alpha 9500 into my Mosley Tri-Bander and checking-in on one of the nets adding "QRP - LEGAL LIMIT" after my callsign. That usually gets a chuckle or two from the folks who know I have an Alpha.

Collins S-Line is still some of the best equipment you can get your hands on. I personally wouldn't mind getting my hands on a Drake TR-4.

I just finished *today* restoring a Yaesu FT-101ZD and put it back on-air. What a beautiful rig. Receive is more sensitive than my more modern Kenwood TS-2000 and I received a number of compliments on the audio. Paired it with a Heil GM-4.

All the old, white guys like Yaesu /sarc

I happen to be a Kenwood bigot myself. The only non-Kenwood rig in my vehicles or my shack is the Yaesu FT-101ZD I finished restoring today. Picked it up for a song, did some minor repairs, a re-alignment and put in a new set of tubes. Tomorrow I re-spray the case (original color) and she's good as new.

The primary base is a Kenwood TS-2000 with a Heil GM-5, Alpha 9500 amp, and PalStar AT2K Tuner w/Daiwa CN-801 Meters..

The "backup" base is my old Kenwood 940SAT with a Heil GM-4, Ameritron AL-80B, PalStar AT2K Tuner w/Daiwa CN-801 Meters.

The mobile in my truck is a Kenwood TS-480HX, the mobile in the wife's vehicle (when I use it) is an old Kenwood TS-50 with the matching auto-tuner.

All my rig's are Kenwoods with the exception of this FT-101ZD. Not sure if I'm going to keep it or re-sell it at this point. Still trying to decide. May keep it around for the old Boat Anchor nets.

Collins was famous only for stability and selectivity, and yes, they were well built.
They were short on sensitivity, so Drake blew them out of the water, not just for performance, but for cost.
For a DX chaser, as I was, there was no reason at all to pay
the big premium to have a Collins.

I wonder if there is an app for the droid that can take just a video image of a Morse code flash, the dot and dash flashes and then translate it into letters. I think I have an app that allows me to send morse code from my Galaxy phone using its LED light. Its pretty darn bright, if on a boat it could be seen a long ways away.

You can turn that “chirp” off (at least with Motorolas).
Check your manual. That chirp made the radios virtually useless in the deer blind - and so research showed how to accomplish this.

"How have I done anything to you by pointing out what I did?

You didn't do anything wrong. Everyone has their own take with respect to rule #1...most agree with yours. JRF has a "...still a free country and I'll do as I please" attitude, which I admire and agree with, but living in the Detroit 'burbs, I feel I need to be a tad more cautious. I'm pretty sure JRF is off the path a ways, and that can affect how you view rule #1 a LOT.

Why attempt to shut down another voice here?

Given his views about personal liberty, I doubt if JRF would try to shut down your voice. He may not agree with you, and that's fine. As for "chest beating bravado session", I agree he comes off that way sometimes, but I'd love to have the knowledge he has on so many topics, and he's SHOULD be proud of it. I know I would be. Pretty sure he's ex-military (from his posts), and that makes him one of the good guys in my view. Also, he has provided a lot of helpful information for a great many on these threads, including me.

Nothing wrong with your post...don't take it personally.

“”they” would have a list of potential holdouts (possible preppers). “

If that scares you from taking any action that benefits you then you had better sit down before reading any further.

“They” have “fusion centers”, data centers, that will target you as the type that could have radios, food, preps, firearms, LONG before you actually buy them. Your geographic location, your income, your phone calling habits, your credit card purchases, your age, your associations such including family, your home State, the foods you buy at the grocery store, the type of clothing and stores you buy them from, the car your drive, its age, type, make and model, your vehicle maintenance habits, your financial investments, account balances, your Internet usage and posting comments, etc., etc., etc., all contribute far more to whom they might target far more than simply owning a radio. Millions of GMRS radios have been sold, but that isn’t nearly the information used to determine your personality profile compared to the list I just gave you, plus about 1,000 other data points...your dog’s name and type, if you own cats, property value, property location, friends, yes, your friends and associations, miles driven to work, political registration, voting participation rate, magazine subscriptions, organizational memberships such as the NRA, gun ranges, FCC, FAA, Boy Scouts, SFA, AARP, etc., jewelry purchases, educational and training background, occupation, church membership, known skills derived by purchase history and memberships and subscriptions, etc.

“They” know more about you and what you are going to do tomorrow before you know it.

So, my advice, stand proud and be counted, scream “HELL, YES! I HAVE GUNS AND RADIOS AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF THINGS! I HOPE THAT SCARES THE HELL OUT OF YOU IDIOTS!!! BRING IT ON!!!”

Nothing wrong with your post...don't take it personally.

Your efforts at peacemaking are noble. And I only posted what I did for the benefit of those who might care, which I don't really, but he decided to make a personal attack assuming I did.

The comments about my "reputation" and calls for others to "review my posts" are nothing more than attempts to silence me by riducule and seeking people to gang up on me somehow. They have nothing to do with prepping or radios and everything to do with personal attacks. The whole thread stream between us started with his insinuating I was a coward for even bringing up the license database issue.

Frankly, I don't care if he's ex-military or not. Three of our sons are current or former military but that does not give them license to disrespect others and I would be the first to call them on it if they did. Interestingly, their military service reinforced the idea of respect for others.

This seems to be how he treats people based your comments trying to justify his behavior. Apparently I am not the only person he treats this way. He seems to use is knowledge as permission to look down his nose at others. I can gather the knowledge I need without putting up with insults.

As I have said repeatedly now, this is not a big concern of mine, but just a little observation I made that I thought I would pass along since there are peepers who do care.

But I have now learned that there is also a segment of the prepper population that not only don't care, but have some type of emotional allergic response to the topic and attack anyone who mentions it.

“not only don’t care, but have some type of emotional allergic response to the topic and attack anyone who mentions it.”

No, son, we’re just realistic and don’t care to hide one itty-bitty part of ourselves as though hiding something like a radio purchase or FCC license somehow hides us from the bigger picture. We’re not children that imagine we are hiding from the world by thinking our gun and radio purchases are somehow not tracked, we know better. We know these things can easily be monitored and we choose not to fool ourselves into thinking we’re being sneaky somehow. We don’t say silly things like “lost them in a boating accident”. We don’t refuse to learn ham radio because doing so might “make a list”. Big freeping deal. I won’t go without a skill or hobby interest just to try to hide something.

So, don’t try to insult us and say we don’t care because we don’t try to hide, that’s just you trying to be cute. You might as well be a 5 year old hiding under the bed thinking mom and dad can’t find you. This isn’t a children’s game of hide-n-seek.

Those “lists”. Name one. Name a single “list”. There isn’t one. If anyone generates a list to take action you won’t hide from it. All kinds of information is stored about you. I wouldn’t need to know of a single firearm purchase to know if you have them. There are all kinds of data points collected that tells if you do.

Stop trying to hide. Stand up and be a man. Make them fear you instead of you fearing “them” all the time. As my gun shop owners says, “Hey, buy a 50, piss them off.”
