You might remember growing up with walkie talkies, well today they are called two-way radios. I remember going to Radio Shack to look at their selection of walkie talkies as a kid and always dreaming of having a high powered military set that had ranges of over a mile. Today almost all two-way radios have ranges from 1 to 2 miles and they are much smaller than the ones we had a decade or so ago. Two-way radios are very useful - they are great for long road trips when taking separate cars, on the ski slopes, at amusement parks, when hunting or camping, on backcountry hiking trips, or even in large shopping malls. Businesses can use two-way radios instead of cell phones in many situations as well. There are no per minute charges with 2-way radios which is one benefit over traditional cell phone use. Plus, if you are in the woods where cell phone don't always work, a two-way radio may just save your life. What should you look for in a two-way radio from the store? Us old white guys remember the Collins gear, then Drake was king. I worked the world with a Drake TR-3
The Japs have taken over, and my last rig was the Yaesu 890 that I left behind when I fled the USSA.
I have no code tech amateur radio license for 20 years, my last radio a fully mod Kenwood TH-78a that could listen to ATC and 900Mhz mobile phones. I’d like to try dual-bands handie-talkie with 6 meters if permissible in my license.

I'm still torn between selling them as parts radios, or putting the effort into rebuilding them.
The problem knocked out the main transformer... that's a sticking point.
Sweet radios. I spent a lot of time on them, CW and SSB. Nice part was that you could put a glass coffee pot over the finals and keep it warm all night long.

Do you mean R4 and TX-4 separate RX and TX units?
The transceivers were TR-3 and TR-4. They had external power supply.
Transmitter is TR-4B. External power supply with a speaker in the matching box. Box plug/pin connector to the transmitter, 120 mains to the receiver.
It's been a while since I looked at them.
I just looked at them to confirm with a flashlight... and cried a little inside that they are dead.
I even have a box full of spare tubes for them.

Yep! I just love keying up my Alpha 9500 into my Mosley Tri-Bander and checking-in on one of the nets adding "QRP - LEGAL LIMIT" after my callsign. That usually gets a chuckle or two from the folks who know I have an Alpha.
Yes, a car charger is available for it. Google BaoFeng UV-5R Car Charger, you'll find it.
Collins S-Line is still some of the best equipment you can get your hands on. I personally wouldn't mind getting my hands on a Drake TR-4.
I just finished *today* restoring a Yaesu FT-101ZD and put it back on-air. What a beautiful rig. Receive is more sensitive than my more modern Kenwood TS-2000 and I received a number of compliments on the audio. Paired it with a Heil GM-4.
I happen to be a Kenwood bigot myself. The only non-Kenwood rig in my vehicles or my shack is the Yaesu FT-101ZD I finished restoring today. Picked it up for a song, did some minor repairs, a re-alignment and put in a new set of tubes. Tomorrow I re-spray the case (original color) and she's good as new.
The primary base is a Kenwood TS-2000 with a Heil GM-5, Alpha 9500 amp, and PalStar AT2K Tuner w/Daiwa CN-801 Meters..
The "backup" base is my old Kenwood 940SAT with a Heil GM-4, Ameritron AL-80B, PalStar AT2K Tuner w/Daiwa CN-801 Meters.
The mobile in my truck is a Kenwood TS-480HX, the mobile in the wife's vehicle (when I use it) is an old Kenwood TS-50 with the matching auto-tuner.
All my rig's are Kenwoods with the exception of this FT-101ZD. Not sure if I'm going to keep it or re-sell it at this point. Still trying to decide. May keep it around for the old Boat Anchor nets.
